Put down Bermuda seed (La Prima) roughly 3-4 weeks ago. About a 20,000 sq ft area. Coming in nicely. At this point I haven’t put down any fertilizer to help it along. When should I put fertilizer down on it? And what kind? The area does have some weeds coming up also. Figured I’ll wait and treat once the Bermuda is more established?

You can put down any “starter” fertilizer. Something around 20-20-10 would be good. As far as weeds, you’ll have to live with them for now unless you want to hand weed. Don’t spray any herbicide until next year at the earliest.

Enjoy watching it grow!

Excellent info! Yeah, I’m not too worried about the weeds for now. I have about 60k sq ft total to seed. Figured breaking it down into 3 sections would make it more manageable to keep watered.

When I do my next 20k sq ft….that section is already covered with quite a bit of weeds. A little common Bermuda as well. Would I be better off rounding up that area first and then seeding with the La Prima Bermuda? If so, how long would you wait after spraying Round up? Or any better ideas?

Yes, definitely nuke everything. Even the Bermuda, it’s better looking to have just the La Prima than a mixture of Bermudas. Although I bet the common will find its way back eventually.

Read the bottle, but I think the new Round-Up concentrate formula says like 3 days or something. I’d wait a week though.

When the nukes come and it's all roasted, all that will be left are roaches, kudzu, and bermuda. Fertilize if you want. All I do is try to keep it out of places I don't want it to grow.

La prima is common bermuda although an improved variety. There will be differences in the look but they will be hardly noticeable. Go ahead and clear the old common out. I agree with tif on the fert. Even a triple 13 would work.

Is it ok to seed Bermuda mid-summer?

I did a hydro-seed a few months ago and it's come in fine, but need to fill out a bunch of areas.

You can but the germination rate will be lower than normal. What I would do is look at the radar and pick the rainiest and cloudiest 2 weeks to do it. Futurecasts aren't always accurate though.

Thanks, what do you think, 80% of normal or more like 50% of normal?

I don’t have an answer on the %, but my average soil temperature yesterday was 98 degrees so that’ll be one of your biggest problems. You want it more around 65-80, but by the time it gets to that then you don’t have much time for it to grow and establish before winter.

I’d still try sometime in the next few weeks, but just note that if you put excess seed thinking you’ll increase the amounts of seed that germinates, you also run the risk of cannibalization where the fastest seeds to germinate will starve the others of nutrients and sunlight.

You'd probably have to look at a University study from a deep south college. LSU, A&M, Miss St, etc. There's about 2 million bermuda seeds per pound so I would just be guessing what % would germinate.

The Bermuda is starting to come in. Went ahead and put fertilizer out as recommended.

Now I’m questioning this “weed” coming in. A bunch single shoots of whatever it is. Hoping it’s not torpedo. Any idea? Maybe nutsedge?

Nutsedge. Mow often and continue to get your new bermuda healthy.

When I first seeded some areas I felt like I had more nutsedge than Bermuda. Like ronk said, get the Bermuda healthy and thriving and don’t worry about the nutsedge yet. Give the new growth a few months before treating it.

Update .. I put down triple 13 on July 18th. The Bermuda has thickened up nicely. I’ve been able to keep it all watered too. When should I consider hitting with more fertilizer? And what would be recommended this time?

When you do put down regular lawn fertilizer I highly recommend Sta-Green Performance Max. I used it this year and my lawn is the best it has ever looked.
