JT hate is played out.
I think it is reasonable to opine that his number is much higher than what the market thinks it should be. Is that Thompson trying to leverage a club into eventually paying his number? Or is it a guy that is overvaluing his market demand?
Many, many felt that Ty Floyd's performance in the CWS (27 Ks against great competition in 2 games) may have played a big role in significantly propelling his draft stock. It seems that may have been accurate given where he was selected, with rumors that some teams considered taking him higher.
So if we are willing to accept that as true, then is it really unreasonable to think Thompson's abysmal CWS performance may have had the complete opposite effect? He wasn't just bad from the plate, he was horrible in the field too. Even what should have been routine plays were an adventure. For a guy that had a significant history of struggles in the field already, displaying that tendency on the biggest stage didn't help.
I think he is someone who pro scouts/teams see as having traits that COULD make him a good pro player somewhere down the line. But that potential is only worth a certain number, as opposed to production, and it doesn't seem like any team is willing to pay it.
Perhaps we see a situation here like the Florida SS where he returns to LSU and finally turns himself to an all-conf. SS and top 3 round pick as a Sr. But I don't think the "hate" (strictly based upon performance, not personal) was totally unwarranted

Be completely honest here. Is jones as good of a defensive 1b as Morgan?
(I am not saying hes bad!!!)

Something oddly strange is going on with Arkansas class this year.

Cale Lansville drafted by the Giants. Wasnt he at LSU last year as a freshman? I guess he went juco so he could enter the draft earlier

Being completely honest here....you could apply the answer of "NO" to every 1B in the country

Made five relief appearances in 2022, recording no decisions and a 7.50 ERA in 6.0 innings with one walk and six strikeouts

That’s not what I’m getting at the guy said we will 3/4 new infield next year I say it’s 2/4 because Jones played alot at 1B.

while breaking in a new guy at 3/4 infield positions
Lets say Guidry stays at P and doesn't play in the infield.
You have White, Jones, Braswell, and Nippolt who all have seen significant time at their positions.
I'm not saying the defense won't take a step back, but to think they will be the bad news bears is laughable

a pimped homerun in the championship game

You'll never, ever have a better defensive first baseman at LSU than Tre Morgan. It's an unrealistic standard you need to forget.

but we won’t be breaking him in.

I don't think it's strange. They just signed a ton of top 100 prospects. That's always a huge risk when building a class

Exactly. The point is that there will be a defensive drop off at first. I actually thought Jones was pretty good at scooping balls but I would not call him an experienced defensive 1b (how many starts did he have there?).
The overall point is that Jt would be welcomed back for anyone who is willing to remain objective. It's not just about how bad/good he was but about his play vs whoever is supposed to take over the ss spot. I have my money on the 4 year guy leading a mostly new infield.
