The baby boomer generation also had it the easiest financially. Administrations have now twice put our currency through its greatest inflationary periods.
I'm a boomer. My first 3-5 years working professionally saw inflation and interest rates that make the current environment look like playtime.
The biggest problem your generation has is it's economically illiterate and too many have enthusiastically embraced the victim culture – both evidenced by posts in this thread.
Here's reality - life gets better and easier with time. To deny this, is to deny the obvious benefits of technological advancement. Remember I said better/easier, that's different from simpler. Life is more complex today.

It’s called life to tough sh&t olympics.
You want something then you work hard for it.
When I went to college most people worked or had a side hussle (hint that the thing you do to earn money.
Lived with roommates living in crappy apartments like El CID, and didn’t get doordash every night.
Decisions you want a degree then figure out how to pay for it.
You borrow money pay it back.
Pretty simple concept after a person graduates high school, the public should not be paying for your education anymore.

You think people earning 70k can save 20k a year?
That sounds like a ‘you’ problem.
Curb your spending habits.

I make over 200k a year and have a hard time with loans since the bare minimum for interest payment is 1500
To break this down:
200k after taxes is more like 125k
Rent in cities that offer this kind of salary for young professionals is 3500 a month or 42k a year
The average car atm is 50k or roughly 900 a month with insurance or roughly 11k a year
Food and other misc expenses can be up to 2k a month or 24k a year
To ensure I don’t get destroyed by student loans, I pay 1500 a month or 18k a year
That at minimum is 95k in expenses for me who make a bit over 125k after taxes
This is excluding emergency funds, saving for down payment on house, etc.
Imagine if I made only 100k
You are the worst combination of stupidity and weakness that I've ever seen.

You made a bad financial decision.
Why am I responsible for it?

Young parents: you need to seriously consider 529 plans for your kids.

I spent more than OP on the 5th through the 8th grade for our youngest kid.

You don’t have to go to college to be financially successful. There are a myriad of ways to make money in the US without a college degree

You shouldn’t have been. 1 bad decision doesn’t justify another.

Boomers are the ultimate handout
Do you even know what ages the boomer generation are?
You can thank the 10,000 worthless degrees university s now offer and government for the prices in tuition

This is a millennial problem. All they want to do is place blame on boomers for their poor decisions.
They get neck tattoos, turn gay, and get worthless art degrees and wonder why they can’t find a job.

quote:Do you discourage student loans unless absolutely necessary? Do you help them calculate total payout over the life of the loan vs the amount borrowed? I know nothing about it but have read that even after 10 years of payments the principle is reduced very little. I don't know how the payment schedule works or when it starts or even how the monthly payments are calculated. Some of it seems almost predatory but, the kid signed the deal and someone with some experience in the matter should help these kids avoid disaster. But....they still owe the money.
I help high school kids apply for scholarships and grants to help reduce the cost of college. I have been doing this for almost 30 years and have never had a student pay full price. It requires a little work but can be done.

First, get a friggin roommate. I had roommates until I got married.
2nd, don't spend 50k on a car. Get a reliable used car. It will also cut down on insurance and registration fees.
3rd - how does one person spend 2k on food?
My husband and I managed on $100k income with 3 kids. 2 of those kids were twins and needed expensive formula. Then they both needed speech therapy. Not to mention needing 2 of all the standard baby equipment. And we lived in Silicon Valley with a 300k mortgage.

I graduated from A&M in 12/09, definitely owed more than $40,000. Didn’t have a job that paid over $80,000 until 2018. Paid mine off no problem. Just have to prioritize. I drove an old crappy truck, never had the newest phone, and lived in a modest house for a while.

Your smart arse, disrespectful comments about “boomers” aren’t helping your case. Grow up and take responsibility for yourself.

That’s where I went. Maritime transportation degree almost guarantees a good paying job after graduation.

Most of the kids are from low income families and have demonstrated financial need. They get enough financial aid from scholarships, grants, work study, and corporate sponsorships that loans are not needed.
