ELIGIBILITY
To have a jersey retired at LSU, an athlete must have completed intercollegiate competition for LSU a minimum of five years prior to nomination. Athletes must have demonstrated truly unusual and outstanding accomplishments, exceeding and in addition to all criteria used for Hall of Fame selection. The athletic performance must be considered unique, such as winning of a Heisman Trophy or National Player of the Year award, and should be based on the total LSU career.

Then explain to me how Chris Jackson and Pete Maravich have their jerseys retired.

I can attest to that. I had an Econ class with Shaq. Of course I didn't know that until the mid term exam, because that's the first time he showed up to class. The 2nd time was for the final. And it's not like I just "missed" him.

Also along those lines. I read an article about Jamie Brandon when he was about to start playing at LSU. Highly recruited, from Chicago, had a very poor upbringing. Raised in the projects by a single mom who was a cop. First time I see him on campus.....steps out of a brand new Nissan 240SX.

You had an odd experience with Shaq. I had a psychology and history class with him and I’m not exaggerating when I say that I don’t remember him ever missing either one. Even if he did, athletes had access to tutoring and even sit in note takers. Not sure about football but Shaq drove a small car where he rolled down the back window to say hi. CJ was similar and didn’t appear to get special treatment.

And Ben McDonald. He never graduated either. So 2 of the 5 never to be worn again retired numbers are for players without a degree

A lot of former players come back and finish degree in offseason and correspondence helps

Gausmann did it that way and still comes back to Baton Rouge every offseason
Ranaudo did same thing
