How did something society used to detest, something that would cause embarrassment and shame become trendy?

I was in HS in the 90s and these kids who seem to be “trans” were the same outcasts who were goth dressers then. Fortunately for those Gen X kids, it was just baggy jeans and silly makeup instead of cutting off their tits and dongs.
