quick 2 day trip to Copper Jan 21-22. Should be fun

Late January/early Feb is my favorite time to ski in Colorado. Enough snow by that time for most of the mountain to be open but still cold enough to where you aren’t shedding layers in the afternoon. You’ll have a blast

Jolla. Please let us know about your experience in Kitzbuehl. Very interested in goin and taking in Christmas markets in 2024 but December skiing in Alps I think, can be risky

Concerned

Mountain-wise or town-wise?

Without knowing, I would say Park City, Mammoth, Heavenly (Although I'm not a fan), or Beaver Creek right down the street.

I agree with park city.
I'd also add Aspen-snowmass.
Mountain only, big sky.

Yeah, the Aspen mountains or even Beaver would hit the mark. Park City certainly.

Anyone here have any experience with Taos or Red River, NM? Heading to Red River with some family during Mardi Gras. Planning to ski 4-5 days. For anyone that's been...is it worth the hour+ drive from Red River to Taos to ski for a day there? Or should I just stay at Red River the entire time?

I've only ever been to Colorado and Wyoming for skiing, so any advice is appreciated!

Kicking off the season next week, heading up to Banff. Been a few years since I was last there. Looks like the last storm cycle has been very good to them, almost 30 inches in five days.

I had a great time skiing at Taos to the point that I'm going back this season. Mt Kuchina is great if you're an expert skier.

I think it’s definitely worth the drive to do for a day. Red River and Angel Fire, at least to me, tend to get boring after 2 days. Taos has some really fun runs and for just an hour drive is worth experiencing and adding to your list of been there done that. Nice on mountain German restaurant too.

Well looks like the PNW is finally getting some snow, hoping that next weekend is decent at Crystal. Meanwhile Alyeska has forecasted 68" of snow over the next 10 days so it should be fun up there

Starting to figure out christmas plans and while I'm supposed to go to mammoth, they have gotten almost no snow for november and december. May need to make alternative arrangements for the ikon pass, potentially thinking of Sugarloaf/Sunday River in Maine or Sugarbush in VT. Will keep an eye on the long range forecasts but not looking too great for the west

Taos did a bunch of upgrades over the summer to their lifts so should be better than before which was cool.

I have never seen so many people skiing in jeans as I did my time at Taos a few years ago.

In Boise? Have you ever skied there before?

Yep, spent most of last year nordic skiing but got some alpine skiing in as well. Some spots for snowshoeing and/or alpine touring in spots along the road up as well. I know people will also skin up to Mores Mountain, some touring options up there past the nordic lodge.

Looks like mid-week operations start today. Will be nice to get up during the week, it is crazy busy on weekends until the spring.

Not seeing much snow in the forecast for Park City before Christmas. Starting to get a little worried.

Question about mountains with little snow.

We are going to Telluride on Friday, and I noticed not many lifts are open and they haven't had a lot of snow. This is my first time going so early in the season. Is it expected that everything just opens up the week before the Holidays, or can droughts like this cause big portions of mountain closures well into the season?

If there's no snow they can't open those other runs, only what has a good base or wherever they are able to make snow. Good example would be Snoqualmie. They are opening today but only Summit West and not even the entire area due to rain that killed snow in certain spots

Early season is a crapshoot. Resorts will open what they can but unless they have a massive snowmaking operation it can be tough. El Nino favored resorts have had it rough so far this season.

I am guessing you are going now because it was cheaper vs going in February, you are finding out why it is cheaper.

I've been in Colorado for 12 years; I can count on one hand the number of days I have gone up before Christmas and have a couple of fingers left.
