Is Cullman, AL still one?

When I was in high school at Athens HS in the late 80s, kid in my classes would tell stories about going to rallies with their dad.

It's always been known as a place not welcoming of blacks. It cemented this reputation in 1998 when 3 white men drug an older black man behind their truck until he died.

Why must you lie? That was Jasper, TX

Couple that with the Jasper Texas dragging years ago and people are still scared of it based purely on reputation.

From speaking to some folks from Jasper, that was a drug deal that went bad.

How can you be from Lake Charles and not know that happened in Jasper?

They even made a movie about it starring Jon Voight and Louis Gossett Jr.

IMDB: Jasper, Texas

Also, the man drug wasn't older. He was 49.

Stopped for lunch at the whataburger there years ago and just got a really weird vibe about the place. I ate quick and got the hell out of there.

My only other impression of Vidor is the billboard about the murdered woman that was up along I-10 for years. Amazing to think how that one billboard sullied the reputation of that town for millions of passers-by.

‘Raped while dying’ billboard

That’s literally what i think every time i drive through Vidor.

And i always will

Ditto that, to a word. Kathy Page was her name, right?

Kathy Page … raped while dying … Vidor police … botched up the case … and so on.

I doubt there are too many people who drove through there in the 90s to early 2000s who could forget those billboards. Before I even knew the term “sundown town” or heard that Vidor had a reputation as a KKK hotbed, they’d already left a mark.

Correct

There were a series of homemade billboards that went on for what seemed like miles for like the whole 1990’s.

The 2 I’ll never forget were:

In Vidor You Can Get Away With Murder

And the ‘Raped While Dying’ one

Literally, when anyone ever says Vidor, I immediately think ‘raped while dying’. It should be their city motto. Maybe get it translated into Latin for the Vidor city seal.
