wasn't there a study years ago about oil changes on new york city cabs about every 3,000 miles vs once a year and they found little difference in wear and tear?

After 200,000 - 300,000 miles or so, the costs, downtime, and risk of failure usually make keeping the car around far less appealing if you are racking up a lot of windshield time for work.

I agree but in this specific case the owner actually worked for Honda and traveled from dealership to dealership managing service departments. So he probably got maintenance done for free while he was on site working. Plus I'm sure Honda told him he would get a free car if he hit the big milestone so he had an incentive to keep it running.

So this is a unicorn case. Just about any other situation would be classified as throwing good money after bad. People say, drive it to the wheels come off. Well cars don't typically die a sudden catastrophic death. They die slowly with a series of annoying repairs - water pump, brakes, radiator, etc. One day you realize that the money you're dropping on repair and maintenance costs could be going towards a car payment on a nicer, newer car.

Water pump and brakes aren't dieing a slow death. They're regular repairs on an automobile. Unless someone is driving an absolute piece of shite and not keeping up with it, buying new is never the cheaper option.

My wife still drives her 10yr old Expedition, it's absolutely thrilling to not have had payments for 5 years now.

If someone buys new it's because they want new, not because it's cheaper than repairs on an older vehicle.

Mine has about 110,000 and maybe 10 oil changes and 1 tire change.

Seems excessive.

Buddy of mine graduated hs in 98, bought an Accord with his savings and graduation money. Still drives it - over 375k miles on it and hasn't thought of replacing it. Aside from some minor repairs, he's never had a major breakdown. Pretty badass

Esp the 1st change. The engine and trans are still in the break in stage until the 1st one. It’s a must.

Exactly. People don’t realize the drive train on a car will last forever IF it’s taken care of properly. Of course you may have to change a drive belt or maybe an AC unit, but overall unless of course you get a total lemon which you will find out about before 50,000 miles.

Don’t be fooled by Mercon LV, a Ford tranny fluid.

I’ve changed the Mercon LV a few times in my 17 and it’s never looked anything like that. It’s been dark red and still clear for the most part. I clean the pan and change the filter every year. That looked to be a neglected vehicle.

We had a '92 Accord manual trans. We kept it for 200K miles. The timing belt thing was pain in the arse and we had to do it 3 times. It was over a $1000 25 years ago and they usually did the water pump and other shite. I was in sales and drove it hard as hell for 5 years. Bought if for $18K brand new, kept all maintenance records which totaled $6K, and sold it for $3K. Even with one of the timing belts blowing early and leaving me on side of the road on vacation, it was till the most economical car I ever owned. 140 HP, top end of 96 MPH going down a mountain in Colorado, and it had a sweet arse front leather bra and 6 disc changer in the trunk.

The worst 18 hours I owned it was the 2 hours spent in the SW Texas State stadium parking lot teaching my wife to drive a stick. Hindsight, I would go back in time and kick myself in my own nuts and get an automatic.

Japanese GOAT automakers. I delayed getting my Porsche for another year bc I was too sad at the thought of trading in my Lexus that's been with me for almost 10 years now. Will probably keep Lexi as a daily driver instead and just save another $20k instead of trading her in.

The car was originally owned by a Honda employee and then was bought back by Honda. My guess is out of pocket maintenance cost is close to zero.

The amount of people in the auto industry that says it's a bad idea to change tranny fluid is astounding. I disagree with them.

At some point in the cars life span if you’ve never changed the fluid, it’s better not too. Changing it later in life of the car if you’ve never changed it before does more harm than good.

Unable to watch the video. Is it claiming that maintenance is all that was ever done on it? Something has had to break or need replacing at some point.
