What was wrong with Cruise as Lestat?

Did you read the books? This is how Ann Rice describes him:

quote:

Lestat describes himself as six feet tall. He has blond hair that is not quite shoulder length, and that is rather curly, which sometimes appears white under fluorescent lighting. His eyes are grey, but they reflect the colors of blue or violet easily from surfaces around them. He has a short narrow nose, and a mouth that is well shaped, but has always been slightly large for his face. His mouth can look very mean or extremely generous, but always sensual.

If you read the books, you'll see that Cruise just does not work as Lestat. I don't know exactly how to explain it, just know he's NOT Lestat de Lioncourt.

I like Cheadle as an actor except for his role as Basher Tarr in the Oceans movies. His English accent was god awful and the fact that Soderbergh let him continuously use it and not improve it was irritating.

I read Interview with the Vampire, but none of the others. I thought Cruise was actually pretty awesome in that role, but I'll admit that your opinion carries more weight than mine in an argument over whether or not he was well-cast compared to the source material. I gotta say though, the bolded portion from your quote (six feet tall, short narrow nose) doesnt really seem to be enough ammunition, in my opinion at least, to justify a "worst casting of all time" nomination. you dont get the feeling that Cruise is short in the movie, due to cinematography or whatever. so i guess you can make a case that his nose is too big. i dont know.

do you think Morgan Freeman was one of the worst castings of all time for his role as Redd in Shawshank?

As great as Tombstone is, never really understood why Jason Priestley was in it.

Yeah that casting was distractingly bad. The actor had no physicality, he was a noodle armed twerp who was supposed to be a womanizing badass.

To this day, I have no idea how Luc Besson messed that up so badly.

Valerian and Laureline had the necessary storylines, including 2 distinct characters that were laid out very clearly. Besson had already done The Fifth Element, which had the exact right tone (it was basically a straight copy). In that, he cast Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich... who were perfect as Valerian and Laureline.
And to clarify, Leeloo was a straight copy of Laureline; Laureline was supposed to be a sexy redhead who was a fish out of water.
So, he KNEW what was 'supposed' to be the case.

If they had cast Valerian right, that would have been an enormous hit. You could argue that Willis and Jovovich were too old for that film, but Besson could have found suitable replacements.

I love Keanu but he’s the first that came to mind. Back then he was perfect for Bill and Ted but action and drama… not so much.

Also…. Leo DiCaprio seemed more like a longshoreman’s boyfriend than a longshoreman.

Speaking of Keanu, I really love the movie, but I know quite a few people were upset at him getting cast as Constantine. I worked with a guy who read the visual novels/comics and wouldn't shut up about Constantine being blonde and British.

I know the bolded part of my quote isn't really enough to base all of my opinion on. Like I said, I just don't see Cruise as Lestat. And I like Cruise a lot. From Top Gun (1&2) to Risky Business to Eyes Wide Shut, I like the guy. He's a damn good actor. I just don't see him as Lestat.

I loved Freeman as Redd. He embodied the role so well that it didn't matter that he looked nothing like the character in the story. (which I read years before the movie came out).
