.
First thing I check is flood maps. Right after that I'm looking at elevations and asking locals about the area. I steer clear of any "deals".

As a stranger, I’d advise you to stay away from Rocky Top, Tennessee.
Folks go up there and never come down.
That only applies to prohibition agents. Should have known not to infringe on a lucrative business in those hills. Don't frick around, won't find out.

We checked out Maryville and Farragut a couple of months ago. I really liked those areas.
What was appealing there? I have seen it on my map searches.

I’ve been working here the last month or so and will be here for another 2/3 months. Staying at a hotel in West Knoxville but have been all over from La Follete/Caryville/Powell/Oak Ridge. This is one of the most beautiful peaceful places in the country I’ve ever worked. I would absolutely live in this area forever. Union Jacks is the go to pub.

Before we visited, we watched many videos on YouTube.
We are looking south of Knoxville with mountain views and areas that are conservative and very low crime.

Sevierville near the new Bucees. You could go there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day.

I have considered the area but wanted to check out the Knoxville area first
Ok. I mentioned those because you suggested smaller/slower pace or I misread. Either way, those spots are great for slower pace and land.
I like Knoxville as well, but land will be more and I think I agree with another poster, if that’s the way you go, I’d look south as well, on a body of water or something. Just depends on your ranking of Cost, Population, Traffic.
Healthcare in the small areas are just as good as Knoxville with the exception of endovascular trained neuro interventionalist and that would favor Knoxville, Fort Sanders specifically.
Good luck, it’s a great area.

I'm a realtor outside of Chattanooga. East Tennessee is great! If you get down to the Chattanooga area I would be glad to help you.

Same reasons why I'm scouting the area.

I’d be more concerned with septic/colluvial soil. FEMA flood maps are easy to pull up online. Easements would be my next concern.
Depending how far is “far”, Cumberland Plateau area is nice. Cookeville & Crossville split the difference between Nashville and Knoxville. Farragut is the most desirable suburb of Knoxville.

Call Dave Ramsey, he probably needs more neighbors

South & East of Knoxville are the better areas. Don't go west of Knoxville and whatever you do DON"T drink the water near Oak Ridge.

I know of some land in the deep dark hills of eastern Kentucky.

Definitely take a weekend trip to check out the areas.

Try to find some, where it will grow more than just rocks.

They are two of the closer suburbs... good schools, low crime, plenty of amenities. Your wife would find easy work as both have hospitals.
If you don't have kids, you lose a main appeal, plus you aren't going to find any cheap land in Farragut or close to Maryville proper.
