A veterinarian has a DOCTORATE of Veterinary Medicine degree, not to mention why your vet bills keep increasing is because more and more advanced diagnostics and medical treatments from human side are being brought to vet side.

And a history professor has a DOCTORATE in history. And a lawyer has a JURIS DOCTORATE….doesn’t make them doctors.
You don’t get the show.

I got my cat spayed 6 years ago. If she gets sick she’ll go die somewhere like a cat is supposed to. So I have not and will not notice the increase in vet costs.

Don’t buy much of it.
Use a instapot, cook about 4 to 6 cups of nice, then cook a pound or so chicken, if you cook the rice second in the chicken water better. Then I put chicken in a big bowl while hot and use a hand blender to chop it up as much as possible and add to the rice, then add in a bag of frozen peas, carrots, beans, (mixed veggies) from the microwave and you have instant dog food. (Sometimes we just use Costco Ro rotisserie chicken or something too)
You can use turkey, chicken, beef venison or really any meat just add it to the rice and mixed vegetables. You can freeze it in little bags or so if u want too. It’s good for about 3/4 days in fridge.
I heat it up in microwave, you can add liquid vitamins if you want and bam that’s it.
Probably not cheaper but my dog’s allergies, etc all went away and they are never sick now

I buy chicken breasts on sale at Kroger for $1.99 pound. Dogs get that plus leftovers. They are healthy any very happy.

Pets aren’t worth that
I can get leg quarters for as low as $.49 a lb., split chicken breasts for $.99 a lb. or whole chickens for $1.25 a lb.
In Petco 2 days ago and saw bagged cat food in there costing anywhere from $3+ a lb. to over $6+ a lb. depending on the brand. That is insane.
I know this for certain-----any time I'm in the kitchen picking chicken off the bone for gumbo, soup or a Tex-Mex casserole, the cat is right by my side wanting as much as I give it to eat. He doesn't do that for that dry crap.

Why don't they make pet food from nutria rats and apple snails?
Posted on 5/12/23 at 4:26 am to PassingThrough
PassingThrough, I'm with you until you recommended dogfoodadvisor.com. Maybe as a place to look for recall info but not for nutrition advise.
I've fed raw for 15yrs, and cook for my current dog. Anyone interested in going that route should really do some reading on the basics of formulating a complete and balanced diet.
I recommend Raw Fed and Nerdy , both the website and their Facebook group, for learning more about dog and cat nutrition.

Hey TutHill, what are you giving for calcium?
Omega-3s?
Zinc? Iron? Iodine?
That's a good start but it's far from nutritionally adequate.

How far down the rabbit hole do we go though?
Baws here buying chicken breasts from Piggly Wiggly. Ok, sounds good, but are you buying your pet ORGANIC chicken?
Why you say? Well, after they have been slaughtered, chickens are then injected with preservatives, including sodium lactate and potassium lactate. Each of these preservatives helps lengthen the shelf life of the poultry, as well as fights off bacteria.
"Here Peanut, got you a nice bowl of lactate. Come and get it!" Do lactates help your sweet Lilly live longer?
Slippery slope we have here.

I'll make tuna salad a couple times a month for sandwiches or eating with some crackers and as soon as that "zip" sound hits the airwaves, the cat come running.
I drain the can of the liquid into a small bowl and scrape what's left in the can after I scoop it out to go with it and he'll push that bowl all over the kitchen licking it up.

You aren’t wrong. There is no such thing as freshly grown kibble. Even the expensive food is processed by high heat and loaded with carbs, both of which increase the risk of cancer. I feed the best I can afford for multi-dog home - Victor and Diamond Natural - and know it still isn’t good.
Lymphoma is soaring in dogs. Osteosarcoma is not far behind. I think it’s the food, combined with the chemicals we use to combat fleas and heart worms causing it. One day, I will research and make their food.

True... Provided you get thier teeth cleaned every 2yrs or so, much more prone to dental issues and heart disease.

I don't know what dogs need, but I know that when I make mine ground lamb and rice he devours it in no time.

That comes from fatty food or junk. Getting into the garbage, being fed fatty meat, skin, and maybe even the dark meat in volume. Knew someone who fixed her Pyrenees a steak and it got acute pancreatitis and died. Don’t give a dog a ribeye! My shepherd always got a lean small steak on her bday, no issues there.

This hits me hard. I try very hard to be as loving as possible to her and she hates me.
