14 year olds don't play hide and seek. They were up to something. Glad she'll be ok and yes the shooter should go to jail. But I don't buy the Hide and Seek story.

Given that anymore there's a lot things a 14 year old can't do without a parent right up their arse on the weekend, I think it's definitely plausible they could be playing hide and seek.

Is it possible there were "up to no good"? Sure. But it still boils down to you can't just shoot at shadows on your property.

You are going to be called PoS like me for not thinking emotionally instead of rationally.

They're all at fault.

I can remember a time (hell, for that, a 2 year old could remember a time) when owning a gun meant being responsible and not using it unless you meant to kill something and if that something happened to be a human being they kind of needed to be a threat of some kind...

Enjoy prison, Mr. Doyle.

They told you they were playing manhunt. They were going off into the woods to smoke weed.

The guy deserve punishment, what that is will depend on the laws… I think we can all agree he was negligent but it goes to a Greater issue. This man felt so threatened in todays world that he opened fire on a group of people(kids in this instance) that were running from his domicile. Paranoia and agitation in todays society are a dangerous combo

As the dad of a 14 yr old, I can tell you they like to run around the neighborhood chasing each other, and they stay up way to late.

I’m not saying the story in the OP is true, but it’s certainly plausible.

Probably so. He's still going to jail for going back inside, getting his firearm, and then using it to shoot an individual that he admits was moving away from him.

Again, there are backwoods in Starks that are nothing but meth activity. Same for all of those small towns along the river. They cook it in campers in the piney woods down there and are constantly breaking into people's river camps and deer lease camps. He shouldn't have shot but he also may have had a reason to be paranoid.

That is why it's best not to go onto someone's property. You never know what may trigger some psycho.

how hard is it to stay off of property that doesn't belong to you?

When kids are running and playing they aren't paying attention to property lines. How hard is it for a grown man to yell "Get off my lawn!" instead of shooting a little girl in the head?

It's Starks. If you knew anything about Starks you would know that a neighbor is several hundred feet away on average. An old dude alone on his property in Starks and you are running around his house is asking for trouble.

Old?

The guy is 58.

Like half the board are older than that.

He's not some frail old man. Jeez.

I had a neighbor that had a bullhorn they would use if someone got on their lawn and they didn't want them there. It was pretty effective.

But your point is super valid. In almost all of these cases like this as of late, chances are if someone just acted like a civilized individual no one gets shot.

The punishment should be a 10 minute lecture and taking away the iPAD for a few days. It isn't exactly a capital crime. They're children.

As controversial as it may be, some people really shouldn't have guns. It's too much power and too many people aren't capable of using them responsibly.

This is where the dude lived according to googling him.

LINK

He doesn't exactly have neighbors so what were the kids doing there early on Sunday morning?

ETA: Some of you are trying to liken Starks to a neighborhood. As you can see it is not and instead it is mostly forest and river bottom backwoods.
