When boomers started having political clout that they still haven’t relinquished after 65 years.

And Sept 11, 2001.

And Obama’s election.

This is a message board meant for discussion right? Well, if I have some shite to say I am going to say it and not keep it simple (which I should because most the idiots here can't comprehend anything more than 3 sentences.

Boy, the way Glenn Miller played
songs that made the hit parade
Guys like me we had it made
Those were the days
Didn't need no welfare state
ev'rybody pulled his weight
gee our old LaSalle ran great
Those were the days
And you knew who you were then
girls were girls and men were men
Mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again
People seemed to be content
fifty dollars paid the rent
freaks were in a circus tent
Those were the days
Take a little Sunday spin
go to watch the Dodgers win
Have yourself a dandy day
that cost you under a fin
Hair was short and skirts were long
Kate Smith really sold a song
I don't know just what went wrong
those were the days

When did the United States of America begin its decline?

Good question, but to really get an answer you only have to specify when it was at its apex. The decline began Apex plus 1 day.

It is increasing at an alarming rate IMO.

quote:

My position is that WW2 era America was the peak, we were the greatest country in the world

Pre WW2 America was a sleeping giant, WW2 awakened our industrial might. Ultimately, we switched from a producing economy to a consuming economy and our industrial prowess began to decline as the cost of producing goods in the US shifted manufacturing to other markets.

There was also a segment of the US population that was marginalized and often oppressed pre and post-WW2. I doubt they usually think America post WW2 was the apex of America (From a purely economic standpoint, it is difficult to argue that it was, though). Prior to that era, America was looked at as a nation of almost limitless opportunity but not necessarily as the greatest Western power, I would say Great Britain was probably viewed as such.

I am not sure we still aren't or if we aren't who is? Or is it just a sort of logjam near the top?

I encourage all of you to read CS Lewis
which books?

The Abolition of Man covers it, but it is pretty intense in the way that he writes indirectly about things and inserts a Christian message by using the concept of the Tao - he does this mainly to not scare off people who will just stop reading if they see something clearly Christian. The point of that book is mainly that if we let truth, real truth, be taken out of education and other aspects of society, man and society will basically be abolished. I'm reading it now, so I am sure I can add more later.

The Weight of Glory is a compilation of speeches or sermons that he gave, and I found that even though they were 80 years ago, several of them relate directly to now. Some also got deep into theology, which is interesting.

I also think everyone should read Mere Christianity, which came from a series of talks he did on the radio in the 40s during WWII, and he took time to write around each of the talks to build up the message more. Same as The Weight of Glory, the messages come from that time but so many of them relate directly to what we have seen happen recently.
