We can rely on trying to outscore people, but otherwise we need some players that are better defenders. Mwani is a good shooter, so even in a motion offense, he can make teams pay if they lay off of him. We will have at least 3 good shooters on the court most of the time, so it'll be a lot better than last year when we really only had KJ. If that team could score, next year's team will be able to score without Mwani having to become a high scorer. Collins will also probably start, and he also won't be a huge scoring threat.

Imo this isn't a given. It really depends on Reed's development during the offseason. Collins in the little that he played was a better finisher than Reed but Reed also has the edge of playing under Mcmahon and developing in his system for an additional year. Should be a really good competition in the offseason for that starting five spot and will probably make both players better in the long run

LSU's offense was bad last year. Their defense was WORSE. Of the guys they have brought in, really only Collins is thought of as a defensive threat. Cook is not a great defender (though he did show signs of defending well at LSU, so it may have just been the demand wasn't there at Tulane). Stewart probably can defend a bit, but he was not known as a defensive guy. Wright may be able to give you a bit defensively. Baker and Dean are not defenders at all. Reed didn't look like he had a strong willingness to defend last season.

That said, it will be interesting to see the rotations because McMahon talked about achieving balance on both ends of the floor being the key to success (he's absolutely right). And to his credit, McMahon did achieve it last season. LSU was almost equally as bad on both ends.

I think LSU will be improved offensively. But I don't think so much that they will simply be able to simply outpace opponents for wins in most games (similar to what Missouri did last season).

I'm sure I will be totally wrong, but I see Cook/Stewart as the starting backcourt. Baker will be the 5. If he's right, I would put Collins at the 4 to defend and rebound because that's not Baker's game. The 3 would be the toss up spot. I like what Ward showed with his length and bounce last season. I think he can give you something defensively and has enough offensive game to be a secondary factor there.

I would predict:
C - Baker
PF - Fountain
SF - Mwani
SG - Wright
PG - Cook

At least to start the season...

I can see a variety of lineups that might be a starting five even early in the season. The only big question I have is who will be back up to Cook at point. Are they thinking Williams can do it? We know Hannibal can’t, and I’m not sure how often Stewart has played point. Maybe McMahon isn’t too concerned about it, especially if Cook is playing 35+ minutes per game

Wright is also able to handle the ball fairly well and was third on Vandy in assists last year so while him handling the point would not be ideal, you could possibly go with a rotation of him handling the point and stewart at SG if Cook needed to come out for some reason

With Bob Huggins resignation from West Virginia something to watch might be the loss of their exceptional transfer class. In particular RaeQuan Battle may be back on the market and LSU expressed interest when he initially entered the portal. He is an extremely athletic and explosive 6-5 guard/forward with tremendous leaping ability and the capability to score from 3-point range. It appears that we have 13 scholarships filled so someone would have to leave but there was something going on when we got to the final 2 with Zyon Pullin so wouldn't be surprised if there was a move available for the right player.

The last sentence in my post kind of answers your question. It appears that we have all 13 scholarships filled but obviously something was in play when we made the final 2 for Zyon Pullin. This is pure speculation but would think the most likely possibilities would be Hunter Dean coming as a walk-on or Trae Hannibal transferring out. There may be something going on behind the scenes that simply hasn't been announced.

While that is true, I think we are not going to make such a move unless the new guy has true point guard skills.

You very well might be right if point guard is the only position we would consider. However, it would seem logical that we would seek to improve if a player (such as RaeQuan Battle) came available. Pullin was unique since he is capable of playing off the ball and could effectively pair with Cook. This is not the case with all point guards.

Probably will find out next Monday if Hannibal is staying or leaving, I assume if he is leaving he is in summer session classes in an attempt to graduate which ends this coming Saturday. He can leave as a grad transfer anytime without needing a waiver (would be his 3rd transfer) Otherwise looking at August 5th which is a bit late in the game to switch schools regardless of status.

With only Cook as a true and capable PG and not knowing if a waiver will be granted I'm sure CMM is a little nervous with Hannibal's roster spot - even if he stays. Before Collins fell in our lap that spot was likely trending backcourt help. The staff was recruiting several other experienced and quality PG's even after Cook signed on so it sure looks like there could be something going on behind the scenes. The kid from Rutgers would be a nice fallback but I don't think we are being considered (KY, Michigan, and Washington are leading).

Great perspective on the possibilities. I can't believe that Cook won't get a waiver to LSU since he could argue being closer to home will improve his mental health AND he will have academic credits from LSU from his freshmen year. Stewart has some nice ballhandling skills and could serve as a secondary ballhandler but wouldn't want to rely on him as a primary point guard. Kerr Kriisa from West Virginia might become available also through the transfer portal with Huggins' departure from West Virginia but don't see that as an option unless Cook doesn't get a waiver. Cook and Kriisa are both ball dominant and likely wouldn't fit well together. In either case we do need some depth at point guard if Hannibal were to leave. Williams may end up being better than expected but tough to rely on a freshman for pivotal minutes. I do believe that Hannibal would end up being more effective with this year's team since it will be much harder to clog the lane against his penetration with the ability to kick out to much improved shooters such as Cook, Baker, and Stewart plus you will have Collins running to the rim for lobs. It will be interesting to see how the roster plays out but definitely seems like we may see one more roster move before the team is set.

Colorado State PG Trace Young has committed to LSU. He is 6’3 180. Will be a senior for LSU next year.

Trace Young from Colorado State has barely played in his three years and is likely a walk-on if anything. He is not a scholarship-level player and cannot find anything that shows a commitment to LSU. This makes no sense. Hannibal would be a far better option as the backup point guard.

He walked on there, so likely would be a walk-on here. However he has a large social media following so he might be coming to LSU to increase that.

Am I the only one that can't find this reported anywhere? Nothing on his twitter, our twitter, nothing.
