Wife and I are looking to go to the Bahamas for 10yr anniversary trip. Think I'm set on staying on Long island. But she doesn't like the idea of island hopping on a small plane.

So far in my research have not been able to find any water transfers from Nassau to Long island. The one company I have found (Bahamas Ferries) currently does not offer the Long Island route. Anybody have experience with this or know of other options to travel by boat?

I don’t have any suggestions, but have to ask why the Bahamas and not the Virgin Islands or something if you want to Island hop?
Just curious.

Sorry, phrased wrong. Don't mean island hopping but getting to Long Island upon arrival. After flying in to Nassau is there ways to get there by water instead of catching another flight.

Have been to British Virgin Islands and loved it. Just trying to go to a new place.

I go to Long Island often and the only ferry is the mail boat which goes once a week and takes 18 hours. Even hiring a private boat operator, that is a little bit of a haul for their smaller faster boats. I can give some names of boat operators on the island if you want to reach out but honestly, I would just fly.

If she doesn't want to fly with one of the carriers such as flamingo air etc. (they fly bigger king airs which she might be fine with), call Stella Maris Air. Joel fly's a smaller 8 seat twin engine plane but he is top notch. Also Marty Fox is another pilot on LI that can come get a group. Whatever you do.... DO NOT BOOK SOUTHERN AIR. They are awful and I can guarantee you that you will never see one of their planes. They will reroute you and try to book you seats on other carriers. Last time I used them they got us a seat on Western Air from Nassau to Exuma 5 hours after our flight to LI was scheduled. Then paid for me to call Joel with Stella Maris to pick our group up from Exumas. Literally asked me to call him and set it up. This isn't a joke.

Michelle who owns Tinys Hurricane Hole on the island would be a good contact if you need anything on the island. Plus Tiny's is one of the best bars/food spots on the island.

If you need any Long Island advice just let me know. It's an amazing island with great people.

Wow, thanks. So basically you can call and pretty much schedule which type of plane you want? It is just 2 of us so we would schedule a plane to ourselves or do they try and fill up a plane for a flight that day? I can call Stella maris Air and try and see about getting on a "bigger king air" plane? How much bigger are one of those?

I've never done a small plane like this before so really not sure how that all works. My wife just has a fear of small planes. Bc it always seems those are the ones you hear about crashing in the news.

Any rec's for places to stay non Long Island? I've been looking at Cape Santa Maria Resort.

Sorry let me clear this up. If you want a larger plane fly a carrier from Nassau to Deadman's Cay. Avoid Southern Air. That will leave likely only Bahamasair as your choice. Sometimes Flamingo air will fly that route too. Bahamasair will likely be flying an ATR42. Google it as it's a pretty large plane that your wife should be fine with.

Joel and Marty Fox will fly real small planes but they are top notch pilots, but you will pay a premium compared to Bahamasair.

If you want to go out on a boat sight seeing/fishing/sandbar hopping call Captain Yan Turnquest who owns Jus 1 Danz. Great person and you will never forget a day on the water with him.

For places to stay honestly I would stay away from Cape Santa Maria if you plan to leave the resort at all. It's very isolated on the north end of the island, and as you know its a longgggg island. Look at renting a bungalow at Tiny's Hurricane Hole. They have three and all are amazing. Right outside your door will be the bar/restaurant. Don't be alarmed, they are only open a few nights a week, but you also get to meet a lot of locals there when they are open. Last trip we met a captain who took us out fishing the next day for free as he was already going. A time before got invited to a locals birthday party the next night which was amazing food and drinks. The owner of Tiny's is a woman named Michelle and her husband. Nicest people youll ever meet and can arrange a car rental for you, pick you up, whatever. Tiny's will put you mid island which lets you explore easier. Also, hillside food supply is close which is one of the few grocery stores.

A few beaches you must hit:

-Dean's Blue Hole (of course...) which is not far from Tiny's
-Compass Rose (very protected and looks out of a movie)
-Gordon's (very southern tip of the island so it's a haul, but its beautiful and guy named Ernest runs a beach bar/grill there which is great for fresh seafood and cold drinks. Watch out as his rum punch is deadly)
-Stella Maris at Galliot Cay (Far north, but almost a perfect beach. Soft sand and the bluest water. It's in a richer area of vacation homes, but the owners of Stella Maris resort own a small plot of land that they let anybody use to access the beach.)

Eat:
-Tiny's when open
-Max's Conch Bar (roadside joint, just look for the million flags along road. Max is a legend and good guy)
-Chez Pierre if you want a nice sit down meal
-Lighthouse Point if you venture into the city of Clarence town
-Letta's. As most are, another road side joint. Top notch food. Next door is a kinda gift shop run by an English ex-pat named Debbie. Debbie is a local you might run into time from time and her group of friends are great to join up with bar hopping from beach to beach

Let me know what else you have questions about.

Thanks for all the info....which I'll come back to. But I need to work on flights getting there first. I'm not done but so far in my initial looking is it at all possible to make it to Long Island all in same day flying with Bahamas Air?

It seems a night stay in Nassau is unavoidable. Maybe you know of some helpful tips there.

Using google maps it says it would take 2 hours to drive from each end. Does that sound right? My wife and I like quiet trips and seeing minimal people which Cape Santa Maria seems to offer. But we do like to rent a car and explore and I don't like the idea of driving most of the island each day. I'm going to look around for any other quiet looking places with more of a beach thats towards the middle of island.

I've always made it in one day, but it seems MSY (if that's where you're flying from) doesn't have direct to Nassau flights which is weird. I can't help with staying in Nassau as only ever connected there.

If you need food in Nassau airport, do not eat at the Wendy's and other American BS in the airport. Walk just outside and you will see a blue shack and a red shack serving food to all the employees of the airport. Eat at the blue one. Amazing island food (jerk chicken etc).

If you go from Columbus Point on the north side all the way to Gordon's on the southern tip I can imagine it getting close to 1:30-1:45 drive. That being said, any of the beaches you will not likely see other people. Maybe at Dean's and Gordon's you might see a couple other groups but very very isolated. It's not a popular tourist island really, so easy to get away. There is not much of anything up north besides Santa Maria, if that's what you want go for it. Mid island will give you local food spots and tons of beaches within 20 minute drive.

Honestly, you need to book a puddle jumper for you and your wife.

Give the wifey a valium before you get to general aviation terminal at Nassau airport.

The 20-minute puddle jumper flight on a valium and your wife will instantly be a small plane flying mofo.

Honestly, there's actually a lot of excitement to be had flying on a 2-engine piper held together with bailing wire, masking tape, and seaweed, flown by a pilot dodging storm clouds left and right, up and down because he isn't IFR and his primary job is a conch harvesting free diver.

Youre going to give the wife anxiety

No lie, a couple trips down there ago we were stuck in Nassau and called Joel with Stella Maris to come pick us up. Sun was setting and usually they only fly at night in emergencies. Well we got him to come grab us, by they didn't have lights on the airstrip back on LI (they just recently got some though) so when we were 10 minutes out Joel called friends to line their cars up on edges of the runway with their headlights on. I love the islands so much

Same.

A few years ago, we were taking a puddle jumper over to Andros. (I won't share the pilot or company because we still use them and I don't want people to be turned off to him.) Anyway, our regular pilot was unavailable, and he got one of his friends to fly us over - 5 of us total.

We get about 2 minutes into the flight and there is a giant mountain of a black cloud right in front of us. I'm sitting next to the pilot and he starts squirming, looking left and right.

Me: damn, that's a big storm. We ok?

Him: yeah, should be fine. but I'm VFR only. (It didn't matter anyway, because this plane's electronics were on par with a 1954 chevy truck.)

He starts fidgeting with some dials, says something into his mic that I can't hear. And then we start dodging clouds, looking for any clear path through these storm clouds. I mean we are going left/right/up/down.

I keep thinking, damn, what's the chances of us finding a plane coming from Andros doing the same thing we're doing? We're bound to meet up, right?

The flight to Andros is normally 12 minutes from take-off to landing. After about 10 minutes in this storm cloud, at least 2 of which we couldn't see ANYTHING but black clouds and lightening all around us, the skies open up and we see the airport right below us.

The pilot's face went from, "I'm about to shite my pants" to "dear god baby jesus, we're ok" in an instant.

He looks at me, smiles, gives me a thumbs up and yells, "We're GOOOOOOOOOD!!!".

After we unloaded, I asked him if he was headed back to Nassau.

"No mon, I'm going to the bar next door and have some kalik. I need some time."

I do love the bahamas.

Ya'll are only reenforcing my wifes thoughts......and have me starting to agree with her

Losing a night in Nassau sucks. We have 2 young kids so we are already pushing our limits of trying to squeeze 4 or 5 nights for this trip. Yes, flying out of MSY.
So if I can get her to agree to the small plane. It is as simple as calling Stella Maris airport and they'll help arrange us buying 2 seats on a small plane for same day service at our arrival?

Call them. They might already have a plane coming over from Nassau that day with seats available. If not, they will tell you options.

We just got back from Nassau. It sounds like to just need a place to stay for the layover? If so, I would suggest getting a airBNB. There are a couple not too far from the airport. You can just grab a local cab once you leave the terminal.

Yes, once i get our flights booked my plan was to find something cheap and close for the layover.

How is the airport in Nassau. Everything I have seen is to give 2-3 hours for connections. Arriving won't be a problem since we do not make the flight to Deadman's Cay in any scenario. The flight back arrives at Nassau at 12pm. There are options for 1:30pm and 3:55pm back to ATL. Is 1:30 cutting it too close?

There are no customs until arriving back in the US right?

You will go through US customs in Nassau. It's very quick. From Deadman's if you fly Bahamasair or whatever you will have to walk from the local terminal to international which is like 5-10 minutes. Then security is pretty quick honestly so as long as local flight back to Nassau is on time you should be fine with 1:30.

If you fly with Stella Maris you will be at the executive air part of the airport and have to take a cab to the main airport.

Got busy at work today and wish i would have seen this sooner. I was getting antsy and nervous so I went ahead and booked the flights. Did not want to risk something happening and not making the flight so went ahead and booked the 3:55 to be safe.

Guess we'll just have 4 hours to kill in the airport.

Now I can start looking toward towards things on the trip. We ended up booking Cape Santa Maria. Turns out we know of 2 people that have stayed there the past 2 years and my wife is sold on it. We'll just rent a car a day or 2 and explore around the island.

I got recommended the Eagles Nesting Restaurant. Anyone eaten here?

4 hours is fine. Like I said, go eat at the blue food shack right out front of the airport. You'll see it just on the other side of the employee parking lot to your right as you are walking from the domestic terminal to the US departures. If you can't ask a worker and he will point it out to you. The old lady who runs it is amazing. Have a Kalik, jerk chicken, rice and peas, and relax a bit to kill time.

I haven't eaten at eagles nest but know some people like it. Was always just too far north for me.

This trip is finally here. Fly out in the morning for Nassau. Wanted to thank you guys again for helping plan this trip. Haven't really planned anything. Just hope to make it there and once on the island we will just take it from there.

As long as I can stop and buy alcohol for the room fridge, lay on the beach in peace in quiet it will be a success.
