Friday was Carb Day, where the teams fine-tune the carb jets on their Hondas and Chevys to get the optimal fuel-air ratio for the expected conditions on Sunday.
No wait, that doesn't sound right.
Friday was Carb Day, where the teams get in a final 2-hr practice and then they all go to a group dinner at an Italian restauarant to load up on carbs so they'll have enough energy for the grueling 3-hr race.
The results follow a familar theme. While the results of a single practice don't mean much, the consistency of three of the Ganassi cars topping the charts over the last two weeks has to be taken seriously. More of a puzzle is McLaren. While they showed their driving-in-clean-air strength in qualifying, they've been all over the place in practice speeds.
The two fast non-McLaren Chevy qualifiers, Santino Ferrucci and Rinus VeeKay, were at the bottom of the Carb Day charts. Alex Palou explains why Rinus was slow, and he was not impressed: www.motorsport.com/indycar/news/palou-veekay-indy-500-fuel-save-obsession/10474010/
I don't believe VeeKay will be able to implement his fuel-saving strategy at all during the race. While everyone knows that the first 150 laps of the race is just about survival (and a bit of fuel saving) until their last pit stops, there are too many fast drivers who would prefer to be in the Top 5 when they make that last pit stop. If you are not in the Top 5 it will be difficult to get to the front in the final sprint to the end. So there will be a dozen cars jostling to get to the Top 5 almost immediately. If VeeKay wants to hang on Palou's tail, there will be plenty of volunteers to pass him.

The surprise that Graham Rahal was allowed to get into a Chevy seat to drive the Indy 500 is underscored by real concern from Chevy about inside information getting back to Honda.

quote:
“Basically, I’m not allowed to ask [Chevy] anything. But that’s OK. I’m appreciative of the opportunity and that’s all I need. They don’t want to use the normal terms with me, which is fine and I respect it. I can’t thank Honda and Chevrolet enough for allowing this opportunity. It’s been a real shock to me [that they agreed to the deal], so I respect and understand the situation.“
“I don’t really need to know a lot, I just need to know when they want me to go where, and how fast they want me to go.”

To no one's surprise, Santino Ferrucci is still not making any friends in the IndyCar paddock.
After Carb Day practice Marshall Pruett called Santino Ferrucci a dick:

And here's the NBC crew showing Santino in action:

After the Monaco Grand Parade, tune in to the Indy 500, where there will be some actual passing.
For those who saw Graham Rahal get bumped from the race last Sunday, but haven't heard any news since, well Graham Rahal is back in the race. Stefan Wilson, who qualified in P25, was involved in a crash during Monday practice and fractured some vertebrae, requiring surgery. Dreyer & Reinbold hired Rahal as Wilson's replacement, despite Rahal being a Honda driver. With the driver switch, the #24 car goes to the back of the grid.
Pre-race show: 11:00 am ET (NBC)
Tune in to the race around 12:30 pm ET (NBC)
Green flag at 12:45 pm ET (NBC)

Does anyone want to put in any predictions?
Create two lists of three drivers each. First, of the drivers who have a reasonable chance to win (you can define that as you wish), who do you WANT to win? The second list is the three drivers who you think will be actually be competing to win in the last few laps.
Who I WANT to win
1. Takuma Sato
2. Ed Carpenter
3. Rinus VeeKay
Who I think WILL win
1. Scott Dixon
2. Takuma Sato
3. Pato O'Ward

For Axel...Caesars has a nice bet today at +1200 for a Max and Dixon win today...
I like Sato but any reason why you are all confident on him today...
I am thinking Pat O...and or something random like McLaughlin winning...

Max is going to win Monaco. It’s just a formality. So you’re pretty much getting Dixon at +1200 to win. Solid bet.

It's hard to be confident in Sato because he can disappoint you with a bonehead move at any moment. But he's in a similar situation as 2017. Back then Andretti had a short period of Indy 500 domination, winning in 2014 and 2016. Now he's back on a top team. Ganassi won last year and almost won in 2020 when Dixon's late race tactics were ruined by the crash that ended the race under yellow. Three of the Ganassi drivers have dominated most of the practice sessions. They appear to have a great race setup. Palou and Dixon are obviously better drivers overall, but Sato's brains and fighting spirit has won him two Indy 500s, and he's in a good position to do it again if he can stay clean.

I think a Ganassi or Mclaren will win today. Too many team cars of each starting in the top 10 for them not to link up and pull away (*this is if the quad of Rossi, Pato, Sato, & Santucci can make it through turn 1 cleanly)
I got Dixon to finish top 3 on fanduel for +375. Liking that bet.

Holy shite Jewel. Thanks for proving I'm not racist. This triggers me 100% as much as when black people butcher it.
