My 86 yr old MIL had cataract surgery and can see fairly well while using reading glasses only.

My 90 yr old FIL has worn glasses for close to 50 years and has needed cataract surgery for 10 years now. He doesn’t want to do it. A magnifying glass is his friend.

Have you considered that your OD may actually be Jeepers Creepers and just wants to remove your eyeballs?

Co worker just had it done. Hates it...everything is too bright and since only one eye was done he sees color differently in each eye. Put it off as long as you can.

Think about it, if an OD is telling you that a cataract evaluation is necessary and not selling you glasses (where they make money), pretty sure it’s there.

Well, I was examined and bought glasses from my OD, and he pushed me toward cataract surgery. Push, like in mentioning it about 3 times, and with my eyesight being pretty good with none of the symptoms of cataracts.

JMO, but I got the feeling there was a 'kickback' of sorts in the mix. After the last few years, it's hard for one's trust in Dr.s not to be affected. Much respect to the good ones.

Noticed my vision had gotten worse recently so I had an eye exam. The OD said no sign of glaucoma or retinal disease, but I have cataracts, probably genetic, not age related. Glasses won't improve my vision and I need surgery, wants to refer me to an eye surgeon. Does this sound plausible? Should I get a second opinion?

How old are you? Did the OD say they were congenital cataracts? Typically congenital cataracts don't progress. Are you having trouble seeing at distance or at near or both?

I just had my second eye done yesterday because of cataracts. My cataracts diffused the light so much that at times I couldn't see .... It was like an explosion of light.
It's a quick procedure. I chose to not be given anything to relax me and just went with a local anesthesia. A little weird watching but painless.
I need reading glasses but no more glasses for anything else. Can use binoculars again without taking off glasses.
So far no regrets.

I'm not an ophthalmologist but i am Presbyterian so I'm around a bunch of really old rich people. This fact saved me from losing sight in one eye due to a retinal tear. Anyway, they all, every single one, wish they'd gotten Cataract surgery a decade earlier than they did. If you're an OT baller you might consider going for the lens that allows for near sighted and farsighted correction...accomodating intraocular lens (aioc) is what I think its called.

Close enough, I guess.

In Baton Rouge, go see Dr. Fay Woo. Small hands are perfect for the cataract surgery.

Didn’t know I had a reputation….

OD here as well…. We all for the most part will get cataracts at some point it’s just a question of when. Most people get them about 60 and our average surgery happens at 73 in our office. All that to be said there are different types of cataracts some people develop what’s called a posterior subcapsular cataract. They are often fast progressing and form in the line of sight. They tend to occur in younger patients and even more commonly in patients that are diabetic.

As the other ODs have said an unscrupulous doctor would have tried to sell you glasses that won’t work first. Them sending you for surgery first is not financially driven. Cataract surgery pays shite these days so there aren’t any kickbacks to be passed on. There is potential on lens upgrades but taking money for that is not common practice.

TLDR…. go see the Ophthalmologist for a cataract surgery consult see what they say. If uncomfortable what part of the state are you in I could easily recommend someone to you.

Wait to age 65 because Medicare will pay for your cataract surgery. Medicare will not pay for LASIK or refractive correction so you don’t have to wear glasses.

Late fifties

He said they weren't age related

More trouble seeing at distance than up close. Right eye worse than left.

I just had my first catarct surgery, in right eye. He will do the left in a week. I'm already very happy with the results. I'm blind as a bat. I've been in contacts (or coke-bottle lenses) for over 40 years. I now see better out of my right eye naturally better than my left with contacts. Cataracts are progressive. Get the surgery, you won't regret it.

Did you get the mono vision lens or the expensive one? Same question to both.

This is semantics, but he's probably incorrect. Technically, most people in their 50s have cataracts. Whether or not they're visually significant is a different story.

Regardless, if your vision has decreased, and you have cataracts, surgery is the remedy. There are no eye drops or "shots" you can get in your eye to keep them from progressing as someone else mentioned in this thread.

If close to Shreveport you can not go wrong with Willis Knighton. Chris Shelby is outstanding and one of their Optometrists Steven Lewis is great as well. They have several surgeons and will tailor everything to your eyes needs.

In Monroe Baron Williamson used to go up there not sure if he still does. I can find out easily if you are interested.

Alexandria Louisiana Eye and Laser.

If it were me I would go to Shreveport and Willis Knighton if you aren’t happy with your referral in the first place. That referral still seems likely solid IMO.

Commercial health plans pay for cataract surgery too. You don't need to have medicare.
