That would be amazing! I couldn’t get up to BR for the three games, but I’m really glad the crowds came out.

And when they actually get a team they will average maybe 1000 a night once novelty wears off

Y’all know if the Kingfish name is under copyright? Can they bring it back?

What other names do y’all like?

If we can’t get the Kingfish name back, then I would hope it wouldn’t be a forced “Baton Rouge” type name like Redsticks or something like that.

Hopefully somebody can come up with a badass color scheme and nickname. They will likely be having some kind of name the team contest

Redsticks would actually be appropriate considering hockey is played with sticks.

If no KingFish, should be the Baton Rouge RiverCats

On the MS Coast the Sea Wolves (team that has been playing in BR) has been doing quite well at the gate. As others have said before, it is extremely fun and relatively cheap for a family.

Hope BR can get the Kingfish back it looks like a definite, as this same thing happened for the Sea Wolves.

Currently the FPHL, which is the league putting on the exhibition has "southern" teams in Biloxi Sea Wolves, Winston Salem, and Columbus, GA. The old ECHL which is still around and what the Kingfish played in had/has teams in Savannah, Charleston, Jacksonville, Orlando, etc. The current ECHL is affiliated with the NHL/AHL so none of those teams or markets are probably going to be in this new league. Then there is the current SPHL, which has Southern hockey teams in Pensacola (Ice Flyers), Huntsville, Fayetteville, NC and Birmingham. They used to have teams in Lafayette, Tupelo/Southhaven, and Macon.

If they could make a league of:
Baton Rouge
Biloxi
Lafayette
Pensacola
Birmingham
Tupelo
Huntsville

Then
Fayetteville, NC
Winston-Salem
Columbus
Macon
Charleston
Savannah
Orlando

Then that would be really appealing to the greater "SEC" footprint. The two current leagues are in much better shape than the leagues that folded and even survived the pandemic so hope it happens.

Don’t forget the Birmingham Bulls & Pensacola Ice Flyers are in the SPHL along with 5-6 more southern teams as well, and the FPHL is bringing in a Virginia team next year too.

That’s my ideal wish for this league. There’s a lot of old ECHL remnants across both the FPHL and SPHL. Get em back together

This happened in Mobile with our ECHL team. First two years the average attendance was around 4,000. It steadily declined each year until just a few hundred diehard fans attended and the team moved to Atlanta and became to Gwinnett Gladiators

Yeah right now it’s selling out because these games are like a one off event. Once there’s 25 of these games a winter people won’t be treating them as one off events and have the same excitement to go.

Plus the team better be good for any chance at a crowd. Louisiana fans are the biggest bandwagon fans on the planet.

the i-10 construction disaster that is looming in BR is going to frick any chance of this sustaining success too

If the expectations are set right, it could still do very well. The Mudbugs have flourished here again since their return 6 years ago. It's junior hockey now, but having weekend blocks of games combined with lower tickets/concessions and going back to the Hirsch has been a big success for everyone.

Not saying it will happen with BR, but if Shreveport can sustain it again then there's no excuse.

Good thing is that it's FPHL, not ECHL. We're not gonna have to sell out every game to keep the team here. The owner will be happy to see 1500-4000 a game with the occasional sellout. It doesn't take much to run a team. Plus the owner has like 5 other teams. He's not relying on Baton Rouge Hockey to put food on his table. This will be a good addition to the Baton Rouge community.

This league is low budget. Based on the other arenas and attendance figures, I’d bet an attendance of ~1500/game to break even.

You're correct really low budget. Birmingham has an SPHL team and I believe payroll is max of $5600 per week for 18 players. Play is atrocious in these leagues.

People that know anything about hockey (skill levels) and have followed the Kingfish, Brass, Mysticks, Icegators, Seawolves, won't be around long. Maybe not the same everywhere but in Birmingham it's big league prices at the concessions.

I grew up with the Brass (still have my red Whitney Bank shirt for riding on the Zamboni at some point as a kid) and have been a season ticket holder for the Avalanche.

I’ll have season tickets as long as there is hockey in BR. There is an obvious difference in skill level (my wife’s first game was G2 of this past SCF and she was talking about how slow they are), but it’s still a LOT of fun.

Some hockey is better than no hockey, and I think those that love the sport are closer to that thought than your quote.

After the hockey team rumors started it was a gut punch that it was gonna be in this shite league and not the ECHL.
