If he can get into any of the service academies, absolutely go. He will get a great classic education and will have a more rewarding enlistment.

He sees his options as follows in order of preference: play sports at one of the military academies (which is feasible)

Even if you throw out the varsity sports option (which is crazy valuable in its own right), there is still an absolute massive chasm between this option and any of the others. The value of an appointment to West Point or Annapolis can not be overstated. Assuming he has 100% buy-in, between the physical commitment, discipline, and education, he will become his best self, and can write his ticket both financially and quality of life.

If it all possible, I would highly stress he go this route...specifically with an engineering major and systems engineering minor.

Definitely encourage him to get a degree. Then if he still wants to join support him. 4 years of college May make him change his mind if not. He will go in as an officer and he could pick a career that is not combat related. But going in as an officer is much better than enlisted. Signed an ex enlisted that went to college after service.

I only have two regrets in life; not joining the military and not marrying an OT 6 that is a chiropractor.

If the goal is to commission go ROTC or service academy if he can get in and really wants the academy experience. I'm glad I didnt go that route and benefited from the typical college experience.

Waiting until graduation to compete for OTS/OCS is less likely to work out. Waiting to compete for and OTS/OCS slot is a gamble. He can try ROTC without a service commitment if he's unsure but

The vast majority of soldiers will never see combat, even during the second world War this was true

Tell him to not choose a middle ground so-to-speak. Depending on the type of person he is, have him choose either something he can apply on the outside (i.e. something mechanical or medical) or special warfare. If he's gonna "fight", have him get trained up and surround himself with, and be a part of the elite.

The romanticized vision of being in the special forces is what he’s seeing more so than learning a trade.

Actually just read this. I HIGHLY suggest the USAF special warfare (biased of course). They have a few Spec Ops career fields I think he'd enjoy if he is that type. And now it's a straight pipeline opposed to when I went thru it, so he'll go to ALL of the schools before going down range. Also explain to him the best way you can that war is unlike anything he can imagine, and that it will stay with him forever.

Sorry your son has decided to transition, any chance of changing his mind?

Kidding. Definitely rotc or service academy.

Looking at your choices I would push him towards one of the Service Academies, 2) ROTC

I would not encourage him to join straight out of HS and go enlisted if he has other options. Even on the enlisted side college degrees are starting to be important in promotion.

Again if the military is something he wants to do and he has an opportunity to go to a Service Academy do not hesitate take it.

There's nothing that a communist/nazi intersectional could ever say that could make me think their inferior eastern technology could ever overcome ours

As someone who would never have lasted even three days in the military - help me to understand this…. I thought that if one first had a college degree, then they would join as an officer ? Are you saying that some people get college degrees and then enlist ? Ive seen An Officer and a Gentleman a few times but this doesn’t compute to me .

I could be wrong, but I think if you go the ROTC route in college then you join as an officer. But you can most certainly enlist having a degree in hand, but would need to still be selected and then attend OTC once you're in.
