Great thread! Hopefully we can keep this one going. If people only realized… but to each his own. I’ll never suggest that someone get into something that they don’t understand or aren’t comfortable with, for risk aversion or other reasons. But I do encourage people to try to learn more about the overall options markets. Much of what happens in the equity markets is at least somewhat related to what happens in the options markets… like yesterday.

Maybe thatguy777 will see this one and chime in too. I like that he typically goes long, while I’m typically short options, and often we’ve both made money on the same underlyings with the same expirations (just different strikes). I also believe Frogtown and a couple of other guys are active options traders.

Here are some of the ones I’ve currently got on (all shorts):

AAPL 9/16 160 calls
NVDA 9/16 127 puts
AMD 9/23 97/73 strangle
AMD 10/21 115 calls
AMZN 10/21 99 puts
SQ 9/23 93/62 strangle
TSLA 10/21 416.67/186.67 strangle
IBM 10/7 120 puts
PAG 10/21 130 calls
MO 9/30 49/39 strangle
MO 10/7 39 puts
LAC 9/16 22.5 puts
LAC 10/21 22.5 puts
BP 9/16 34.5 calls
BP 10/21 35 calls
KMI 9/16 19/17 strangle
CHPT 9/16 13.5 puts
LICY 10/21 6 puts
ARCC 9/16 18 puts
RUN 9/16 25 puts

what's up

so I have been watching SPX and QQQ puts for awhile to get a feel for how they move ... thinking of jumping in as I have only played inverse ETFs to this point

Have y'all ever actually exercised a put or call to take the shares to market? One thing guys I know that trade options is "we never exercise em - win or lose with em"

Here is my board. Long oil and nat gas and short the market pretty much. All defined risk.

Diagonals. All calls. I do short positions on these calls every month.

VET Dec 10/Oct 27.5
CTRA Jan 2023 26.5/Sept 32
CRK Jan 2023 12/Sept 20
PR Jan 2024 7/ Oct 10
UAA Jan 2024 7.5/ Oct 10
Vale Jan 2024 13/ Sept 13.5

Long diagonals on oil and gas have worked for me the last 12 months. In Sept 2021 I bought 45 Dec 2022 VET calls at the 10 strike for $2 a piece. a $9K investment. At the time the stock was at $9. The stock is now trading north of $25. By the time this trade is over I should make about 70K. Also, I paid off my initial $9K investment selling calls every month.

This is one reason I like long diagonals. Get long calls and generate income every month.

Bull put spread
VET Oct 22.5/25
VET Jan 2023 22.5/25

Call spread
VET Jan 2023 20/25
PR Oct 8/9

Lots of VET. You have to go with your best idea.

I usually have about 10-12 positions. I had short positions on SPY and Ford(F) I sold yesterday. I have been playing SPY with put spreads on the high side around 420. That has worked except for when SPY spiked to 430 recently.

I think we are going back down on the S&P over the next three months. Maybe re-test the 3600 level. Will be doing a calendar spread or whatever I like.

Options are where the real money is made or lost now. I’ve been trading options for about 30 years. The game has definitely changed since I started. Brokerage fees and commissions were much higher and the spreads much wider in the past with fractional quotes. In the beginning I could not trade from a website and had to call the broker to place the order and they would call back if the order was executed. Since options move fast you can just imagine how much better it is to trade confidently with today’s platforms, real time quotes, and decimal point trading. Has completely opened up and allowed efficient option trading to the average investor.

Guess I just wanted to let the younger people know how lucky they are as option traders today.

I mostly employ neutral option strategies. Volatility is what I trade.

I've been daytrading SPY options since February. Just with a tiny account under $1k until I become consistent, which could take years. Huge learning curve with daytrading but I really enjoy it.

Any other options daytraders here?

So my profit range for APRN is roughly 4.25 to 6.85 now. If we continue to slide down I'll work to lower that range some.

For PRTY it is now 1.40 to 2.50

I wish of course these stocks would show any semblance of a pulse to the upside. However, given the straight carnage, I'm pleasantly surprised I'm not down all that much to this point. Glad I started out very small as these two are more of an experiment for now.

I think the main worry becomes gamma risk as we approach closer to expiration dates.

I’ve been mostly hit and run lately. Quick trades. I’m sure everyone saw the googl trade that didn’t work out as j pow gave the market a reason to dump the next day.

I put this on today:
XBI
sold jan 80/70 put spread to buy the 90/110 call spread. Debit 1.11

Not sure this thread is helpful unless ppl talk about selections, strategy, and/or how they end up managing the trade. Otherwise it is just a list of random trades.

Here's a trade I made this morning as an example:
At market open: STO ADBE 9/30/22 260P $1.50

I start with a chart and look for support levels that I can be around. Then I head over to the option chain and see if the premium in the option chain matches up with where I want to be. I do a lot of short strangles but with a sharp drop like this one, I'm only selling the put side to start. May add the call later. I like 1-2 weeks out depending on the underlying and the premium. Chart shows COVID lows were about 255 as an obvious support level. No good structure anywhere else so I went for the 9/30 expiration and grabbed the 260 strike to get a decent premium. I'd prefer to be below the support but opted for the next higher strike as the strikes are 10 points apart on this expiration. I'll adjust to get below that level if I have to defend the position as time goes by. Mid price was .90 at market close, so off to a good start so far.

Crack kills! I worked for Charles Schwab Options Department for 7 years. The only entity that made money in the long run was the house - I.e. Charles Schwab. The loser, crack head gamblers eventually lost their arse! Don’t f’ing tell me different, mofo. I lived it. Save your money and buy groceries. Better investment!!!!
