Why would someone bring a rainbow flag to a sporting event?

I was channel surfing and noticed an MLS game on ESPN, Austin vs Portland. I don't enjoy soccer, but noticed the stadium was very full and everyone was wearing green and black (Austin's colors), so paused momentarily to check out the crowd. Included with all the green and black flags being waived were several rainbow flags. Sometimes you just have to ask, why? I mean, everyone is decked out in the team colors and someone decides, "hey, I think I am going to bring a giant flag to announce to everyone my sexual preference". Why? As a heterosexual, it would never occur to me to bring a flag or sign announcing that I am attracted to women. Is the intention to pick up a date at the game? Is it to say, "hey look at me"? Is it a recruitment initiative to convert the masses, kind of like having a John 3:16 sign? I just don't get it.

I could be wrong but I think it's to promote acceptance of homosexuality. Like basically they're saying they're proud to be a homosexual. Again I could be wrong - this is just my interpretation.

Hmm their forefathers seemed to like having a lot of BBC within arms reach on the plantations. Then you had the whips and stuff. Seems pretty gayyyy to me.
