Headed to Salzburg next month for a day trip from Munich via train. Arriving Saturday morning and leaving that evening.

Is it possible to walk from the train station to the old town? I understand most of the sites are in and around old town and should expect a lot of walking which is fine.

What specific sights did you enjoy the most?

Any lunch recs?

My plan is to end the day at Augustiner Brau for beer and dinner before heading back to Munich

Thanks for your time

I've never done it and I don't know where the train station is, but its a pretty small city. The old town is definitely all walkable.

Going off of memory I'm fairly certain the train station is not far. I'd think if you couldn't walk it there is likely taxi/ ubers parked outside the train station.

Its also a great city to bike, you might look into a bike rental. They may have one of those rent by the day bike companies for tourists or something? I'm not sure.

Yes, probably a 15-20 minute walk, depending on how fast you walk.

The area leading up to, and immediately around the fortress is really nice.

You can grab a bosna at Balkan grill for a quick snack.

The Augustiner beer garden was a lot to take in the first time. It opens at 3, and will probably have a large line/crowd waiting to get in if the weather is nice. From there it was kind of a mad dash to get a table and in line for beer. They serve one beer, their marzen. Order a full or half liter from the cashier, save the small receipt (very important), grab a mug from the wall, wash it out, then hand your small receipt and mug to the guy pouring beer, and that's about it.

The food hall is pretty big there, I had the leberkase, very good.

If you're a Mozart fan, you can see is birthplace and childhood home.

It’s a bit of a walk, but not bad. The brewery is high up on a hill if I remember correctly—I took a cab back from there to the train station to ensure I made it on time.

Also, beer garden is probably the same, if not a longer walk from old town than old town is from the train station.

Without luggage, it's a doable walk from the train station but if you're in a rush a taxi shouldn't be more than 8-10 euro to get you to Getreidegasse.

Stroll to the end and take the funichular up to the fortress. There's a Stiegl cafe up there if you want to grab a drink with some spectacular views. For lunch, you could take the short walk to Restaurant Stieglkeller which has a nice balcony area but if you want to head toward Augustiner, Bärenwirt will work well too...as will Braugasthof Krimpelstätter just down the block from Kloster-Mulln. It's also a great pre-game spot before the Augustiner garten opens.

Bob had some great tips for a first-timer. It's a ton of locals, but with any luck you can find a table outside or if weather is bad, one of the bierhalls should work fine too.

That's my favorite biergarten anywhere in the world ...Hope y'all have a great day-trip!

Like drock said, lots of locals. Get a good table and you may be joined by some.

Schloss Hellbrunn
Schloss Hohensalzburg
Mozart’s birthplace
The glockenspiel main city area
You won’t have time for Eagles Nest /salt mines
Sound of music tour

Stirglkeller or Augustiner breweries are recommended.

After you're done with Augustiner bräu, make sure to stop by the cathedral if it's near evening, sometimes they can have the church lit up only by candles and a local choir doing chants. It makes for a really cool scene and after a few beers, can enhance the mood

I was there in May. Fantastic time. Are you alone? With kids? I can offer more if you switch to a car or lengthen your stay.

To see:
Go to the fortress and tour it (nice military musuem inside with some unique Italian vs Austrian WW1 memorabilia). Great place for a beer also. Walking the walls and taking in the views is a great morning or afternoon.

Mirabell gardens are a must if you are with a sound of music fan. They didn't do much for me.

Augustiner for sure is worth a visit. For food, eating there is great but if you want to stay in the neighborhood for a nicer meal after having a few beer I'd recommend Augustiner Braugasthof Krimpelstatter (right around the corner and affiliated with Augustiner...just nicer food).

Barenwirt is also very good for food.

Can you manage more than a day? Look up the near from home channel on youtube. Lots of great munich day trips, and there series on the Saltzkammergut (lakes region) has some excellent tips (Traunsee and the Schafberg cog train at St Wolfgang were awesome).

I'll try to upload some pics later. If you are doing a day+ Berchetsgaden is very close.

If only given one day I would arrive in the AM, go up to the fortress (take the funicular if you don't want a hike), tour it, and have a beer or two at the outlook overlooking the church. Then I'd go to eat lunch from the stalls at Augustiner before finishing with an early dinner at Barenwirt or the other place I listed above. Both are close to Augustiner.

If you can manage more than a day, the Eagle's Nest is an absolute must. Also, back in Munich, go to the Paulaner Brauhaus and get the pork knuckle. Oh my Jesus.

Salzburg
I have been there once and it was for a day while traveling from Munich to Vienna.

The first thing we saw was Mirabel Gardens because we parked right next to it. Very pretty and worth a visit. Then we walked across the river and strolled around the OldTown which is small and walkable.

Definitely go in the cathedral. Mozart’s house is now a museum.
We enjoyed Cafe Tomaselli , an old historic coffee shop. We

We didn’t eat a meal in town because we had a big breakfast at the hotel but one option for a meal is the oldest restaurant in the world. Charlemagne wrote a favorable review of it. I forget the name of the place but it is easy to find. We walked in to take a look before the lunch crowd arrived.

Good suggestions above. For a nice lunch try St. Peter Stiftskulinarium. It's a restaurant built into a cave in the Old Town and full of locals.

The walk from train station to old town is not far and you should walk the Mirabelle Gardens before heading to the old town. After leaving the gardens, hang a right and cross the pedestrian bridge over the Salzach to the old town.

I recommend visiting the Dom Quartier museum which can be entered from the Cathedral foyer after visiting the Cathedral. In the Cathedral, on the left side of the altar, take the stairs down to some of the foundations for the old cathedral and other areas under the altar.

Salzburg is a great little city and 1 of my favorites in that area of Europe.

My wife and I will be in salzburg for three days in December as part of a bigger trip. We were thinking of doing a day trip or two to Hallstatt, Berchtesgaden, or possibly a ski resort on top of visiting the city of salzburg. What is the boards recommendations for best use of the three days we have in the area during this timeframe?

It's a solo trip but my schedule only allows for one day in Salzburg. Thanks again for all of the great tips!

I'll post a Munich/Salzburg review when I get back

If you’ve got 3 days there, I’d do two in Salzburg and one day trip.

Eagle’s Nest in Berchtesgaden likely won’t have the busses running up the mountain in December, I’d save that for another trip. Hallstatt is worth a visit IMO, though I’ve only been in summertime. If you can somehow stay the night there, that’ll give you a nice evening with fewer tourists than during the day.

Either way, you probably can’t go wrong in that part of Austria.

Are you going to Vienna? That is my fa favorite city east of France and Italy.

In fact if you have three days, I would spend it in Vienna and do Salzburg as a day trip. I love Salzburg but the major sites can be seen in a few hours.
