My point is, there's a lot of different reasons people let their weight get so out of hand. You never know what someone you pass on the street has been through or how they got to that point. Being kind and encouraging goes a lot farther than making fat jokes, at least for most people.
Exactly my point, yet I got numerous downvotes. Misogyny is real on here.

Sometimes personal have underlying health issues like thyroid issues or depression or medication side effects.

None of those are excuses for weighing 400 pounds. If I gain 20-25 pounds, then yeah it’s a legitimate excuse.

So you know one person who is morbidly obese and you’re pondering why “people” do what he did?
Ever occur to you that your buddy is an outlier? While many people may be overweight, they’re not all “out of control”. Pudgy, plump, and fat. But not “out of control”.

For some, it's an addiction no different than drugs or alcohol.

I understand everyone is different but I’m at my heaviest ever right now at a chubby 218 pounds and feel like I’m on death’s door . I’ve been hitting the gym hard for a couple weeks now and hoping to get back around 185. I don’t understand how people can eat as much as they do, I feel like it would take effort to put down enough to be obese, unless it’s over a really long period of time and weight gain.

ETA: I’m probably underestimating how gradual it can be for some people. A year of not paying attention to your weight can do a lot of damage but slight and consistent weight gain over 10 years can be like the boiling frog thing. I’m also in my early 20’s so I bet if I kept up the habits that got me to 218, I’d be 300+ by the time I was 40-ish if I didn’t change anything.

all you have to do is take a trip to Walmart and you will see that he is not an outlier.

Weird how China, Japan, India, and central Africa don’t have the same thyroid, depression, or medication issues as we do. Weird, huh?

People seem to think they can shock their bodies into quick weight loss and when that doesn’t happen they give up and gain even more. Some people can’t accept that it’s gonna take a while to get weight off, just like it took a while to put it on. Time just seems to move slower when you’re paying attention to something rather than eating whatever and gaining weight.

How did you get over the hump, and what did you do to lose and keep off the weight?

Let me start by saying I am not the norm. I have a great metabolism and was an athlete through college.

When I gained weight it was because I was comfortable in a relationship. She also gained weight. 7-years later we were both fat as frick and I was disgusted by looking at us in photos. That was what finally got me to make a change. It wasn’t easy either, it ruined my relationship because she didn’t take it as seriously as I did and now I am single. I am happy, but I lost a woman I thought I’d marry.

Soon after college I stopped working out and let my dietary norm continue and it blew me up. Drank a lot as well.

Now i intermittent fast until 2 pm everyday at the earliest, work out and also limit fast food to 1-2 times a week. It really is a lot about just being even relatively disciplined in our ‘consume’ society.

They think it’s a drop in the bucket whatever they try but they can’t realize results can come more quickly than it seems.

Depression is a motherfricker and it takes more than “toughening up” to crawl out of it.

I’m 6’0 210 and feel fat as frick and I’m working on it. I can’t imagine how hopeless 300+ would feel like.

While I share a lot of OP’s sentiment, I can very easily see how someone who’s depressed and already overweight could get discouraged. It’s hard to lose ten pounds for a lot of people; if you’re someone who’s 300 pounds and doesn’t even have the confidence to show his face in the gym, I think it could easily seem like an impossible battle

If you dont eat a bucket of fried chicken for breakfast, lunch, and dinner while only walking to your kitchen and back every day you can lose weight extremely fast

Doesnt take a prisoner of war all that long and it wont take the standard fatty

In the immortal words of Fat Bastard: I can't stop eating. I eat because I'm unhappy, and I'm unhappy because I eat. It's a vicious cycle.

You nailed it. Overeating is an addiction just like tobacco or drugs and alcohol, only the difference is you can quit these other addictions and thrive perfectly well. You have to eat food to survive. Most alcoholics can't have one or two drinks and stop, most tobacco addicts can't smoke 3 or 4 cigarettes and be done for the day. With a food addiction you are constantly battling the temptation. For some people it is just a bad habit that can be altered but for many others because food is everywhere and so easily attainable particularly fast food it will always be a struggle. If you have never battled depression or an addiction or both you wouldn't have a clue.
