This is actually brilliant on his part. He has been beating the race drum since this happened, so even though the judge has barred him from mentioning race in regards to his own trial in a few weeks, the seeds of immense racism in Nola have already been planted. If he's convicted of tax fraud, it will be because of white supremacy in the South, aka Garrett Ward.

It answers the question as to why THIS case was so important to him while the city is experiencing rampant violent crime. He tried the case himself because he needed to show how much he's fighting back. It's quite self-serving.
