I was at a function a couple of weeks ago and met a retired college football coach (who has a national championship to his credit). I asked him about NIL - he said he favors the concept, but the present program needs a lot of work.

The NCAA could establish a committee of university presidents, AD's, comptrollers, and attorneys to formulate what those amounts are, with increases built-in every year/few years. They would develop a tier-system pay scale, for a lack of better words, for individual sports: football, basketball, baseball, softball, gymnastics, etc. These pay scales would apply to ALL DIV I schools competing in that sport.
this would bankrupt most universities. Women would need to get the same amount as the men, and there's a large number of athletes across all sports that would get their stipend.

Would bankrupt most college athletic departments.

This is genius

The idea that these kids are entitled to the money ignores the fact that they already got free tuition, free rooms, the best food service, free tutoring, and the worship from other college students. Top it all off by possibly getting a multi-million-dollar job straight out of college, even without a degree.

The athletes are entitled to make money on their NIL. The US SC said so.
They are no different than say a child movie star, or a child singer.
Michael Jackson was worth millions long before he turned 18. Many of these kids deserve the same opportunity.

They do now, and we call it a scholarship.
It’s a one year deal, and does not have to be renewed.
It’s worded heavily in the university’s favor.

Because these student athletes want to be paid and treated like pros, schools should be able to trade them to other schools even without their consent, like pro players. Even during mid-season. Only seems fair that a kid can leave a school for a better offer that the school can trade a kid for a better player.

This is where it is going if these player keep playing the games they are right now. They will end up making it professional. Make them sign contracts I don't think the kids want this.

I just know that if I agree to a deal with a kid to pay him for his name, image or likeness, I want to guarantees as to his playing time, and whether or not he will enter the transfer portal.

If i give him money, I expect him to be around a while and get playing time

Giving money to a kid who can leave on a whim is a farce and we will have to see it play out before it gets better.

I don't know what the donors are doing, but if I paid an athlete for his NIL I would absolutely insist that he have a contract with my company wherein he forfeits the majority of his revenue should he transfer. A balloon payment upon graduation should accomplish that.

It's more than a runaway train...the nearsighted morons that let this go on in the first place were toatlly ignorant of a) intended consequences and b.) unintended consequences.

Any athelete going to a state school which recieves taxpayer funding should lose his scholarship if he recieves NIL...let em use the transfer portal and go wherethe taxpayer is not funding the school...an intended consequence.

This whole thing is a bottomless bucket of shite...and a damned unecessary one at that.

I would imagine the agents doing these deals will make sure this happens. I was more talking about that the players want to be able to blackmail schools for bigger deals, leave one school for another fine. But don't get all pissed when if a player under performs they don't get their deal pulled. Don't get pissed when they kick you off the roster. You want to be a adult and live in the adult world you better be ready for real world circumstances.

Why? The NIL doesn’t cost the school a dime.
In fact boosters providing NIL deals to attract talent are improving the talent at that school and are helping them to make money.
It’s been going on for decades under the table. Now it’s out in the open. Schools profit.

If you think mommas & daddies are interested in 3 or 4 years “development” over 5, 6 or $8 million now? It ain’t the momma & daddy that’s greedy, it’s you.

I’d love to go back to the days of Capones, Casanova & Hodsons playing for the love of LSU but those days are gone. We better get serious about NIL or be in serious trouble.
