We rent a beach condo that has DIRECTV but not the subscription DVR service. Is there a separate dvr that I can purchase to hook up to the TV when we are staying at the unit? I would really like to record certain sporting events when we are away from the condo. TIA

So the condo has DTV available, but it's not "your" DTV - right? I don't think this is going to work as they don't really connect any DVRs other than their own. I would call DTV and ask them if they have any suggestions, though.

What is your regular TV service? You might be able to just take a Fire or or other streaming device to access stuff. Assuming there's internet service there of course. This would be a prime use case for something like YouTube TV where you just need an internet connection to get to your account and service including your DVR.

Do these sporting events get uploaded somewhere afterwards to stream? I would look into that or even YouTube.

You could always grab a roku and do a free trial of some streaming service for the week and dvr that way.

I would assume if it's a single unit condo owned by one owner, then it would have it's own DTV service? Just take your own box from your house to use it while you're there.
Don't forget to take it back home with you. I do this at my lake house most weekends so that I don't need 2 subscriptions.

This may be a stupid question, but can I purchase a Direct TV receiver that is "jailbroke" that I can use at the condo? I do not have a personal Direct TV account.

No and the condo probably has a commercial Directv account like what hotels use. I don't think an active legit Directv receiver would work if you brought it from home on a commercial account.
