How did Maryland and Delaware escape the South’s cultural orbit?

Coming up in elementary through high school, every social studies textbookbook labeled Maryland and Delaware as “the South.”
The US Census Bureau still considers it the South.
But most of these days, you don’t see them mentioned in cultural conversations about the South. So what gives?

The northeast is crawling down the coast unfortunately.

They cucked out and didn't join the Confederacy

It’s because they had slaves. Culturally I wouldn’t say they are southern. More that mid-Atlantic block.

Nor Va isn't the South anymore either

Maryland and Delaware are FULL of white trash motherfrickers on par with any Livingston Parish trailer park.

Virginia used to be one of the most southern states. Now it’s hardly the south at all

Laws against interracial marriage in Delaware weren't repealed until 1986. Only Mississippi and Alabama had these laws on their books longer.

I actually had sweet tea at a café in Maryland about 25 miles NW of DC 9 years ago.
It's the South.

Lincoln deployed the army to prevent Maryland from seceding.
I don’t know about Delaware, but Maryland was overrun by transplants the way Virginia was later. There are pockets of southern culture left, but the state is largely ruined.

Biden got it repealed back when he was young, like 100 years ago

I don't know the answer to the OPs question but I just wish all those yankees who claim to hate the south would stop moving down here

Where did you go to elementary school?

Both of those states are included in the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) that the Unions use as the accepted measuring stick on "southern" teacher pay.
Guess which two states are by far the highest.....

Because they are full of yankees.

Maybe because the line drawn in your history book doesn’t necessarily equal culture.

Urban growth, the Northeast corridor (Boston to D.C.) basically swallowed them up and influenced them in a way that didn't happen when the South urbanized. Same thing has happened to Northern Virginia too which was basically the heart of the Confederacy.

WTf is "West South Central"
Posted on 3/12/22 at 3:34 pm to UndercoverBryologist
Can’t beat the “west south central” sub-region. Don’t think I’d live in any other southern region.

Apparently you have never been to Slower Lower. That’s southern Delaware
