This is the key bit from the 2nd paper:

quote:

However, the liquidity portion of the NWF - actual cash and gold in the accounts
of the Ministry of Finance in the Central Bank - has been disappearing at a faster pace: from RUR 8,8
trillion ($113 billion) at the beginning of 2022 to just RUR 5 trillion ($53,5 billion) by April 1st 202410.

Russia can continue this war for another year or so, but then the money literally runs out and there's a financial collapse.

Yes, the liquidity squeeze is real. It's the prostitute's dilemma - Putin has it but he can't spend it:
quote:

While the liquidity portion of the NWF [Russian reserves] made up about 65% of the total NWF amount in early 2022, it is down to only about 40% now - this happened because a significant part of the NWF was invested into corporate securities of Russian state companies. These funds are still available, but not for immediate spending.

It also should be noted that about 40% of the NWF liquidity reserves are stored in gold (the remaining 60% in Chinese yuan), which means that they may be difficult to be recovered immediately: the price of gold is negatively sensitive to large offerings on the market, and Russia has difficulties selling its gold due to Western sanctions.

The WTF ledger component is the 60% Chinese Yuan. Good luck with that.

Wow, thank you for posting this. This is how we (those of us on team USA and team NATO and team Ukraine) win this. Russia does not have endless bodies and endless resources and endless political will to wear Ukraine down like Putin is trying to project.

I've seen people pointing this out from the start, that the sanctions (even with Putin finding work arounds) are designed to ultimately sink the Russian economy, and soldiers who aren't getting paid are going to stop shooting other soldiers who desert... the military collapses, the various regions of the country stop getting money from Moscow and have to act independently... the country dismantles itself and Moscow can't force it to stay together,

Well, okay, that's smart, I guess... but, like, can we not let millions of Ukrainians die and freeze while that plan is working out? If the plan is to let Putin lose everything instead of letting Ukraine win, can we not let Ukraine lose too much in the process?
