Looks to possibly be a much much more expensive ship that bit the dust, their brand new Karakurt class missile corvette, Tsiklon. It’s one of only 4 in active service and the only one of the Black Sea fleet. 2 ATACMS apparently hit it.

I’m not a fan of a lot of things about Ukraine, hence why I don’t want another cent of my money going over there. But them winning is certainly a better outcome than the opposite.

Now THIS is going to save lives.

Russian side confirming Ukraine has just sunk the “Tsiklon” in the port of Sevastopol with an ATCAMS strike.

Built in summer 2023, this ship was the carrier/launcher for Russia's fastest "zirkon" missiles.

Damn! I wouldn't want to be the person in charge who decided this ship needed to be operating within missile range.
What a dumbass.

Crimea gets more and more challenging every day for Russia. When F-16s arrive, it will get even harder.

I sure hope so. But the delays in the training of pilots and deployment of F16s has almost been long enough for some new counter-weapon to be developed. The technology of war is moving very quickly right now. F16s could have likely made a more meaningful impact a year ago. Still pissed off about the delays.

Since 2004, the Putin group has lived on Gazprom money.

I read a few places that yet another factor for the invasion was that it was getting increasingly difficult to convince the Russian public that there was not enough of that Gazprom money to better their lives...

Russia can continue this war for another year or so, but then the money literally runs out and there's a financial collapse.

Wow, thank you for posting this. This is how we (those of us on team USA and team NATO and team Ukraine) win this. Russia does not have endless bodies and endless resources and endless political will to wear Ukraine down like Putin is trying to project.

I've seen people pointing this out from the start, that the sanctions (even with Putin finding work arounds) are designed to ultimately sink the Russian economy, and soldiers who aren't getting paid are going to stop shooting other soldiers who desert... the military collapses, the various regions of the country stop getting money from Moscow and have to act independently... the country dismantles itself and Moscow can't force it to stay together,

Well, okay, that's smart, I guess... but, like, can we not let millions of Ukrainians die and freeze while that plan is working out? If the plan is to let Putin lose everything instead of letting Ukraine win, can we not let Ukraine lose too much in the process?

The more help the better

But even if not, and they keep getting the minimum from us and Europe, then Putin still loses.

To me it looks like drones are the future and surface ships aren't. If I was Taiwan, I'd be stocking up on drones that can take out invading Chinese troop ships. And, of course, have viable ways to protect the drones from a first strike. Sorry to get away from the Ukrainian war.

Nope. Jake Sullivan is very worried about escalation.

Seriously, though, Sullivan's plan to slowly bleed Russia dry of money and equipment still has a good chance of working, if the West keeps supporting Ukraine for the next year or so it would likely take to work.

Ukraine would much rather just get the help they need to win (and I would prefer that as well), but Ukraine would also prefer Sullivan's plan to having no help at all, which is the other choice.

But you are correct that a lot of Ukrainians will die in the meantime. That's why I hate it and want to just give Ukraine what they need to win and let them hit Russia with it.

If this war has taught us anything, it's that an invading force has no chance in open terrain (water or land) against drones and hand held ATGM type weapons. They are cheap and incredibly effective.

Can you imagine China trying to assemble and transport 1 million men across the 100 mile wide straight of Taiwan? it would be a turkey shoot. Even China doesn't have that many men.

When China eventually takes Taiwan, it will be from within via some sort of political and economic and social absorption rather than overt military force.

Key Takeaways:

Ukrainian forces reportedly conducted successful drone strikes against Russian military infrastructure and oil refineries in occupied Crimea, Krasnodar Krai, and Leningrad Oblast on the night of May 18 to 19.

Russian milbloggers appear to be experimenting with different ways to express critical opinions of the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) following the recent appointment of Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov.

Russian Security Council Deputy Chairperson Dmitry Medvedev threatened Russian internet technology and telecommunications company Yandex because its large language model failed to provide responses that cohere with ongoing Russian information operations.

A St. Petersburg court ruled that Russian authorities can seize over 700 million euros ($760 million) of assets from three large European banks on May 18 on behalf of a Gazprom subsidiary.

Russian forces recently marginally advanced within Vovchansk and near Chasiv Yar and Donetsk City.

We're still in the early stages when nobody has figured out effective counter drone measures yet. That will come and we'll reach some kind of equlibrium again. Drones aren't going away but armies will learn how to operate in spite of them.

KYIV INDEPENDENT: "Zelensky: 'Our partners fear that Russia will lose this war'"

Kyiv's allies "fear" Russia's loss in the war against Ukraine because it would involve "unpredictable geopolitics," according to Zelensky.

They fear a Russian breakup. and a civil war that stretches across 11 time zones, with access to nuclear weapons. Understandable, but that outcome is unavoidable at this point. The only question is how much damage do they allow Russia to do beforehand.
