The control cable for the air coolers and the chimney of the refinery's furnace was damaged

Every unit in a refinery has air coolers (usually called fin fans), unless they mean cooling towers. Furnace? Who the heck knows what is meant by a control cable. A refinery has fired heaters in most of its units it also has steam boilers. I have zero clue what is meant by a furnace.

Russia is a seriously inefficient economy all the way around. It's technology is way behind that of the West in so many ways. It's got that boyars ruling the serfs mindset, just get more serfs. They may as well provide teaspoons to dig ditches instead of even shovels

In Soviet days when a manager wanted small nails, he would set the quota by the count. If he wanted large nails, he's set the quota by weight.

Soviet workers common quip was, "They pretend to pay us and we pretend to work."

Gazprom needs to fire their CEO and get things in order. Russia is booming. Why are they losing money? It’s got to be poor management.

Russian Forces Push Deeper Into Northern Ukraine
A Ukrainian military unit said that its troops were forced to retreat from several positions and that one settlement had been captured by Russia

Russia is showing Ukraine weaknesses according to a article from CNN but if you only read this thread you would swear Russia was getting ran over yet the facts show it's just the opposite.

This thread has turned into a conversation about anything other than the war. In the last 48 hours a relatively small group of Russians have accomplished as much as the entire 2023 Ukrainian counteroffensive and it's crickets

We were told on here that the aid would stabilize the lines. Looks as if Affirmative Action Austin is about as good at delivering weapons as he was tucking tail in the Afghanistan debacle. From what I am hearing it is not looking good for Ukraine in the north.

Looks like its time for Windbag Macron to put up or shutup.

You could let the weapons actually make it to the front lines before deciding if it's helping.

Putin proposes firing Shoigu, appointing new defense minister

by The Kyiv Independent news desk May 12, 2024 9:42 PM

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on May 12 proposed firing Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and nominated Andrei Belousov to replace him, according to the Telegram channel of the Federation Council, the Russian parliament's upper house.

Belousov was Russia's economy minister in 2012-2013, an aide to Putin in 2013-2020, and first deputy prime minister in 2020-2024.

Shoigu has faced criticism from Russia's pro-war hawks for mishandling the war effort in Ukraine.

Putin appointed Shoigu as the secretary of Russia's security council, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Shoigu is replacing Nikolai Patrushev, who has been the council's secretary since 2008.

Actually it doesnt even sound like Russia is struggling.

A couple of hours ago the head of the ukranian forces "admits we are in a very difficult situation in Kharkiv". I think this translates as "we forgot our track shoes for the retreat".

But I heard ukraine took out another oil can, beer can or something, 100s of miles from the fighting. Way to use those shortages of weapons fellows, excellente.

Quite the contrary, Im taking the American side, as in taxpayers, who all know this is just a laundering operation.

And I detest people who drape themselves in ukranian flags while condoning the deaths of thousands of their people by continuing to pretend this is over some sovereign territory. Its disgusting.

It could if there is a hydrocracker and extra hydrogen is needed. Unless a naphtha reformer which produces 97 octane gasoline and provides hydrogen for desulfurizing gasoline, diesel and jet fuel It would have made the biggest fireball over any other unit in the refinery.

Actual units are lost in translation plus from sources that have little technical knowledge.

People who want to continue bankrolling one of the most corrupt countries on the planet with taxpayer money belong in an asylum. You would give them a trillion dollars a year if you could

But Russia's Kharkiv offensive is at least a limited success so far. Ukrainian defensive lines were not near the border, so Russian progress to date is not predictive of larger success.

However,

- Even though Russia has already lost a lot of vehicles in the assault, Ukraine should have destroyed more. The Russian success to this point shows a poor mining effort on Ukraine's part. Whether that is poor planning or simply a lack of mines, I can't say.

- Russia has succeeded in drawing Ukrainian units to this area from other areas of the front. This was a key Russian objective in their Kharkiv operation.

- Russia will likely succeed in establishing a buffer zone near the border. This will likely prevent any future incursions into this area from the "Russian Volunteer Corps" or the "Free Russia Legion." This was another key objective of this Russian operation.

So, no, Russia isn't about to take Kharkiv. But they weren't trying to, as they don't have the force structure to do that. This is a limited operation, but it appears to be relatively successful so far.
