Has anyone discovered which of the three refineries in Ufa was hit? There are three there all owned by Bashneft (Rosneft). Each is a medium sized refinery.

Are there other refineries in Bashkortostan?

FWIW, when I try to look at refineries on Satellite views, there are some huge acreage of where old plants once were. It almost like all of the Exxon Refinery in Baton Rouge or Baytown have been torn down with bare ground left sitting there and likely contaminated like a mofo, because Russians still don't care. It's plain to see how all manufacturing in Russia had fallen over the decades. I'm going to call non competitive with the Free World

Ukraine's intelligence drones attack Lukoil oil refinery on 11 May – Ukrainska Pravda source

VALENTYNA ROMANENKO — Saturday, 11 May 2024, 13:07

Drones of Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) attacked the Volgograd oil refinery in Russia on the night of 10-11 May.

Source: Ukrainska Pravda source in DIU

Quote: "There was rumbling in Russia once again on the night of 10-11 May. DIU’s drones paid a visit to the Volgograd oil refinery, owned by PJSC LUKOIL-Volgogradneftepererabotka, at 03:45. The primary oil processing units AVT-1 and AVT-6 were affected."

Details: A DIU source said the current condition of the systems is being clarified. At the same time, it is known that the control cable of the air coolers was damaged, resulting in the disconnection of seven coolers. The smoke stack of furnace P-1 was also damaged.

Background:

Russian Telegram channels and some media outlets reported that seven drones were downed over Volgograd and Kursk oblasts on the night of 10-11 May. The operation of the air defence system was heard in the Krasnoarmeyskiy district of Volgograd.
A fire broke out in the Russian city of Volgograd on the night of 2-3 February, with petroleum products burning over an area of 300 square metres.

For reference: LLC LUKOIL-Volgogradneftepererabotka oil refinery is the largest petroleum products producer in Russia's Southern Federal District, with a plant capacity of 14.8 million tonnes. It has been a 100% subsidiary of PJSC LUKOIL since 1993.

Blah blah blah, just like they “continued to assess” they would struggle with all the other cities.

They will “struggle” in that they’ll take months and suffer 25k+ deaths, and finally get it. This last approved tranche of military aid isn’t gonna do shite because Russia isn’t just gonna walk away as long as they’re making progress. You only stop Russia by STOPPING Russia.

The refinery in Salavat (Salavatnefteorgsintez), Bashkortostan, currently part of Russia, which got successfully hit by Ukrainian UAVs today (May 9), is more than 1,300 km (810 Miles) from the front line.

The refinery in Salavat

I thought that this one had been hit in April. Not a big one but still ouch.

When I see reports of projects in these refineries I notice that the new big deal has been to install desalting units over the last 20 years. We've been using these since at least the 1950's in the USA and Canada even in simple hydroskimming refineries. All oil and gas comes out of the ground with at least some old ancient salt water. We dehydrated the natural gas at the field here (Russia lets hydrates form and freeze up its pipelines). We have long removed the saltwater with electrostatic desalters prior to the first step, atmospheric crude distillation (crude unit) here as well. I've seen desalters bought as used for refineries built in the late 1950's which had been used in older refineries which upgraded to larger desalters.

Russia is a seriously inefficient economy all the way around. It's technology is way behind that of the West in so many ways. It's got that boyars ruling the serfs mindset, just get more serfs. They may as well provide teaspoons to dig ditches instead of even shovels

It's obvious as to why backwards Russia has to use meat waves. Take Jordan Peterson's discussions of IQ and how the US military will not take anyone with an IQ lower than 83. They are incapable of doing anything properly. Russia must be full of very very low IQ people

Stalin would attack mine fields in WWII with meat wave attacks ignoring the presence of mines.

Irrelevant, really, to my question...

and I don't believe any of the details about the deal to remove the nukes in Turkey and Italy were known and confirmed until the fall of the Soviet Union... and nobody really knew they were there at the time.

"We" just promised (quietly) not to keep arming the Cuban ex-pats who were trying to overthrow Castro (and people will forever think that group played a big role in his assassination)...

The world thought Krushev blinked, and that dented the USSR's rep and eventually got him removed.

But the point is there were no American politicians taking the Russian/Cuban side... kind of like you are doing now

It is documented that Teddy Kennedy tried to get help from Russia to stop Reagan from being elected.

ISW Update

quote:

Key Takeaways:

Russian forces are conducting relatively limited offensive operations along the Russian-Ukrainian border in northern Kharkiv Oblast and continued to make tactically significant gains in likely less defended areas. The reported sizes of the Russian elements committed to these limited operations and of the Russian force grouping deployed along the border in northeastern Ukraine indicate that Russian forces are not pursuing a large-scale operation to envelop, encircle, or seize Kharkiv City at this time.

Russian forces reportedly launched offensive operations along the Russian-Ukrainian border in northern Kharkiv Oblast before they had completed bringing the Northern Grouping of Forces up to its reported planned end strength and have so far only committed a limited amount of combat power to offensive operations in the area.

ISW continues to assess that the Russian offensive operations in northern Kharkiv Oblast likely aim to draw Ukrainian forces from other sectors of the front while allowing Russian forces to advance to within tube artillery range of Kharkiv City.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian military command may be evaluating the risks, prospects, and timeline of offensive operations in northern Kharkiv Oblast based on the assumption that Ukraine cannot and will not be able to liberate territory seized by Russian forces. Putin's and the Russian military command's calculus about the threat of Ukrainian territorial gains is likely shaping Russia's overall operational approach to seizing territory in Ukraine.

The limited Russian offensive operations in northern Kharkiv Oblast suggest that the resumption of US security assistance has not changed Putin's calculus or that he launched the Kharkiv effort without reassessing the operation's fundamental assumptions about Ukrainian capabilities in light of the resumption of aid.

The directions of Russian offensive operations in the international border area suggest that Russia may be attempting to create a "buffer zone" to protect Belgorod City, as Russian and Ukrainian officials have recently stated.

Russian forces appear to be attempting to quickly isolate the battlespace east of the Siverskyi Donets River and seize Vovchansk, a direction of advance that Russian forces may believe could threaten the Ukrainian grouping defending in the Kupyansk direction.

Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) Head Denis Pushilin reiterated a series of Kremlin narratives intended to justify Russia's invasion of Ukraine and attempted to flatter Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian military during an interview in honor of the 10th anniversary of the DNR's founding, likely in an attempt to curry favor in the Kremlin.

Ukrainian forces reportedly conducted successful drone strikes against a Russian oil refinery in Volgograd Oblast on the night of May 10 to 11.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin submitted proposals on the composition of the new Russian government to the State Duma on May 11.

Russian forces recently made confirmed advances in northern Kharkiv Oblast; near Svatove, Chasiv Yar, Avdiivka, and Donetsk City; in western Zaporizhia Oblast; and in east (left) bank Kherson Oblast.

The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) continues to highlight frontline Russian units fighting in Ukraine.

225,000 BPD Lukoil Volgograd burning about the size of Shell Norco. Numerous reports. AVT 1 and 6 were hit, which are likely atmospheric vacuum towers (distillation columns), for the throughput likely the only two in that refinery. These are normally operated as part of the crude unit, so could be more damage than just this.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE
12 May 2024

Gazprom, one of Russia's state-owned energy companies, has reported its biggest annual loss for 25 years. Gazprom's revenues fell by around 30 per cent in 2023, leading to an annual net loss of approximately 629 billion roubles (USD $6.9 billion).

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and subsequent degradation of Russia's relationships with the West, has severely constrained Gazprom's operations. Gazprom's failure to fully re-orientate its exports away from its dependence on European markets will likely continue to restrict its profits until at least 2030. Whilst Gazprom has been able to divert some of its trade to alternative markets, due to infrastructural limitations, these likely only accounted for 5 to 10 per cent of the lost European sales in 2023. It is highly likely that an increase in future sales is reliant on construction of new export infrastructure, such as the 'Power of Siberia 2' gas pipeline.

High taxation on Gazprom's revenues in 2022 and 2023 has almost certainly reduced the ability and incentives for Gazprom to invest in its expansion to alternative markets. In 2023, Gazprom paid an estimated 2.5 trillion roubles (USD $28 billion) to the Russian budget, approximately 9 per cent of total government revenues. The Russian government plans to further increase the tax burden on Gazprom in 2024, which likely contributed to Gazprom's decision to cut its investment for 2024 by around 15 per cent.
