Utility companies (electric and gas providers) can enter into fixed price long term contacts with gas marketers, but they don’t. Even after last year, they didn’t learn their lesson. Their natural gas supply contracts remain unhedged. When they enter into contracts for gas based on index prices (which is how they choose to contract) they get the benefit of low gas prices for the majority of the time, but when there is an emergency that impacts supply and demand and prices sky rocket, it screws their customers. Then the utility company points the finger at natural gas marketers like they are the bad guys.

If you’re under the impression Entergy LA doesn’t have natural gas hedges, then you are wrong.

Communists think you should have a tiny house with a wife and 1 or 2 kids. I have a big house, a wife and 4 kids. We use a lot of electricity. Our provider is CLECO. What they do is charge a small amount per kw up to so much, a medium amount up to a limit and then for climate killers like myself, an astronomical amount for a lot of use. This is how they start to punish people who don't follow their ideology. I installed a window air conditioner in my living room. I only run it to cool the main part of the house during the day. I turn on the central unit only at night. We are all going to have to figure out ways to cut back from now on.

They are thieves. I used to think $150 was high. This past month $311. By far, the highest bill I have ever had. Problem is in my area of Texas, they have a monopoly on energy supply.

Not sure what the alternative is.

FYI they only charge extra from May to October. November to April is fixed.

Also, it isn't communist ideals that are a result of a sliding scale per kWh it is capitalism. The company is incentivizing you to reduce your peak usage because they have to build their entire system around peak usage, not average usage. If they can reduce peak usage their operating costs go down. There are points in peak usage that if they regularly go over in an area or system-wide they will have to spend large amounts of capital just to service those peaks.

Both of you are wrong. It’s a shitty business plan is what it is. They get away with it because they have a monopoly in many areas. Their competitors who have monopolies in other areas are doing the EXACT same thing. Unless you can get (3) energy providers in the same area you are going to be at the mercy of those providers.

Man made climate change is a ruse. My house was built and mid-seventies and I’ve upgraded all windows, attic insulation, installed tankless water heater, and went 100% LED. In addition, I have less inhabitants with kids leaving for college and MIL passing away. My bill was 3x’s higher than it’s ever been.

So frick anyone blaming this on climate change. This is simply a monopoly doing what a monopoly does. The only thing worse would be to have the government take it over.
