Yeah I think George is secretly hoping he himself dies before he finishes so the pressure and questions will go away and he won’t have to deal with it
And with how the show ended and the storylines wrapped up, I really don’t care about the books .

It's the only thing that makes sense. He's had ten years to finish the story, and the shown ending was so hated that he would rather die first than be subject to more criticism.

Re reading the first few books it's really quite sad how the whole thing got too big for Martin. They hold an incredible amount of promise, the first book in particular.
Anyway this is a theory board so help me out here.
So I'm one of those who believe Rhaegar was the amazing heroic good guy everyone seems to remember him as. It helps that he's also very dead in a series that kills it's 'good' characters. regardless is what follows more or less what happened?
He was all-in on the prophecy of the prince who was promised. He had his kids with Elia of Dorne, finally had baby Aegon and proclaimed him as the one in front of her.
Then, I surmise, he decided to stop living for prophecies and start living for himself. Lyanna Stark happily ran off with him and got pregnant with Jon. She sent a letter to her eldest brother, Brandon, but a younger Littlefinger, who had just gotten his arse kicked by Brandon in a duel over Catelyn got his hands on it or stopped it from arriving as a way of getting revenge / getting rid of Brandon, who was a known hothead.
Brandon Stark got no letter, assumed Rhaegar kidnapped his sister, and being a known hothead went south and demanded her back. The Mad king did Mad King stuff and had Brandon and his father in the most psychotic way he could think of. War kicked off shortly after.
Rhaegar died on the Trident. King's Landing was sacked and Elia and all of his children murdered including baby Aegon. The prophecy was severed.
some time passes and Ned finally is able to make his way to the tower of joy to rescue Lyanna. I don't remember any indication that Lyanna was aware of the prophecy, but by this point she was undoubtedly well aware that Rhaegar was dead and all of his kids murdered. So she named him Aegon because for all she knew he was the last one (and it's the OG Targaryen name) and, if she was at all aware of the prophecy, it could have been an effort to keep it alive since it was so important to him.
that was my take from all of it.
I am convinced the fake aegon raised by jon connington was shat out of thin air because GRRM was pissed that people figured out Jon's parentage so easily and decided to gum up the workds by 'killing' jon and then introducing a bunch of new people. it was really when he started introducing all kinds of pointless ancillary characters that the story started to derail.

I'll let someone else respond to that.

What are the pointless characters to you? I actually prefer book 5 over 4.

I sort of agree with this but he was definitely setting up the Golden Company for some role from the first book. Maybe it was a completely different role.

Brienes chapters with nimble Dick or the Damphair/iron born were a slog and could have been shortened.

I'm convinced that I am the only person in the world who believes fake Aegon isn't fake. He's the real deal.

Every time this thread gets bumped, I get excited and then disappointed. My emotions can’t handle it

I'm making my call now.

Who would you want to finish his work? i like sanderson, but i don’t think he’s gritty enough. i would look to Joe Abercrombie.

I honestly have no one in mind. In this I tend to agree with GRRM himself. The IP needs to die with him.

There’s two of us. The Aegon story is awesome and the books need more Targs. The dynasty lives!!

I haven't written it off. Whatever happens with it, I've enjoyed those chapters so far.
Arya has been and probably always will be my favorite character, but the character I've really grew to like is Reek. The last chapter when he catches up to his sister and she doesnt recognize him and he says his name is Theon Greyjoy, man that part is awesome. He's been reek for so long and had it almost permanently drilled in his brain that that is who he was, to have him actually speak his own name for the first time in ages, was pretty awesome.
Reading the pre released chapters though he doesn't seem to get much of a break right away though. I think the next chapter starts with him being hung upside down if I remember correctly.

I agree. People hate him because he turned on the Starks, but he was a hostage. He was a well cared for hostage, but still a hostage. His story is so much more interesting because he is conflicted on the whole thing.

I think people hate him because they unconsciously relate to him as well and their mind rebels against it. No one wants to recognize and admit that they are slaves to their lives like Reek

I want to say Sanderson has even said that he’s never finished reading “A Game of Thrones,” because it’s not his cup of tea.
Someone more gritty would be needed, but I doubt it would happen posthumously.

I was rereading the Earthsea books to see if it was appropriate and interesting for my 8 year old and a quote at the back by Le Guin made me think of ASOIAF.
quote:
THE REASON PEOPLE DON’T BELIEVE that I didn’t plan a trilogy from the start is that fantasy now suffers from endemic trilogitis (or the even more serious form of the disease, incurable seriesism). Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is largely responsible for this epidemic, since its six books were printed in three volumes, a trilogy. I expect Earthsea is also to blame, although it ended up as six volumes, too. . . . But when I started The Tombs of Atuan, I saw it, as well as I can recall, simply as a sequel.

I have read that this was due to the price and scarcity of paper at the time of release. Tolkien never intended for it to be a trilogy.

So instead of being the reason the genre is so awesome he's now to blame for certain writers having writers block or being fat and lazy? Got it. I think.
