For you duck hunters, how often do you pay attention to the water?

If I stepped on that in the dark setting up I’d have to throw my waders away
Reminds me of a time I took my little cousin. Big front blowing in, a little rainy, very windy and the temp dropping by the minute. I shined my light across the pond and a bunch of eyes were glowing. We got out in the water and I glanced down and a big bullfrog was floating next to me. They were all over. I guess they were out because it was fairly warm the night before and that front blew in so fast it must have stunned them. I grabbed a few but let them go and started setting up for ducks lol

Always. Water is front of mind for many reasons when I hunt. I also hunt with a dog in the colder months so I am extra sensitive to alligators. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they aren't there unfortunately. There's too many of these damned things around SELA.

Man.... That brings back a horrible memory. My HRCH/MH was taken by an alligator right in front of me. Happened in the blink of an eye. Best dog I ever had and ever will.

I know, during teal season, those used to be a fear. That's why I mainly hunted rice field for teal season.
Back in the day, by the time duck season opened, the temps had dropped, at least for a little while, to the point where most gators were slow moving. I can remember stepping over them actually. I guess, these days, the water temps are still pretty warm by duck season.
I guess there is very little good about duck season down here anymore.

Even with rice fields you don’t really get a hall pass on gators if you have a canal that floods it in close proximity. Gators stockpile into those during the Summer since those end up being the only dependable deep water source and they will venture into the fields themselves. Most times you will sniff out a rice field gator while tossing decoys and obviously any gator that does decide to crawl into the spread will be easy to recognize. The real threat is a dog working marks by the canals or having to cross them.

Gator count is insane. I remember in the 80’s hunting it was rare to see a big boy in a pond. Now, you see gators everywhere with multiple 8ft plus on a 15 minute boat ride. No way I’d hunt with a dog these days.
They ought to open season year round and stop the repopulation by gator farmers. Supposedly there are 2 million plus wild alligators roaming south LA.

1982 called and wants its decoys back.

When fall temps are high, they seem to be more active than cooler temps. had a 5' swim through my spread one day. In November.

They are terrible now. Same boat ride as a kid I would see zero gators. Today I will count 25 plus.

They actually work fine on ANY ducks…..on Catahoula lake they hunt over 2-lifter soda bottles painted black.
