I cannot predict until I see just who is on the roster and how they gel together. I doubt we will improve on the 9-9 SEC record although our OOC record could be better than last season.

WAY too early to predict anything. The rosters for the teams, including LSU, aren't 100% complete. Neither are the schedules, though the SEC home/away opponents were announced yesterday.

To that end, on paper, in May, the SEC schedule looks relatively balanced for LSU:

1. LSU only has to play Alabama 1x this year...albeit on the road. (Alabama has been a 2x per season opponent for the last several years)

2. Ole Miss replaces Alabama as a 2x opponent. Historically, year 2 is the season Beard's teams make a big jump. But I'll still take OM over an Alabama program that is rolling right now.

3. Home games vs. Auburn, Florida, Texas and Tennessee are favorable. LSU has to go to Kentucky. But who knows what they will be in year 1 under a HC who the fans DID NOT want?

I look at the overall picture though. A 9-9, or even 8-10 conference record with a NCAA Tournament appearance is FAR better than, say, a 10-8 SEC record with little shot at the NCAAT.

Based on his first two preseason predictions, and the performance of the Coach he succeeded, Conference Championship.
Surely its time.

Roster looks slightly less talented. Logjam on the perimeter and nothing on the front line. 9-9 will be tough to replicate especially with 2 more, better teams coming into the league.

Not sure how you are seeing a less talented roster . You have another year of growth for Jalen Reed , tyrell ward , and Mike Williams , plus a much better freshman class coming in this year than last year . Also last years team played without cook and Stewart for the majority of games so that took away a lot of potential talent . This years team may or may not be better record wise but this will be a more talented team then last year

9 or 10 wins with a better OOC record.

Arkansas (the new Kentucky), A&M (always tough) and Ole Miss are the only teams we play twice this year. Harder to come by wins in a tougher SEC. Vandy may be the only truly bad team, and they are usually tough as an underdog.

We will go as far as Ward, Reed, and Williams take us. Collins and Robert Miller will be X factors.

With Cook eligible for the entire non-conf. schedule last year LSU probably wins 2...MAYBE 3 more games. Depending on who those wins were against, combined with the 9-9 SEC record, that may have been enough to get LSU in the NCAAT discussion.

However, in this era of basketball past results rarely predict future success from year to year with so much roster turnover. McMahon did a better than average job in retaining his "stars" for next year. But even then, LSU is replacing more than 1/2 of their roster.

Last season McMahon wanted to get "older". He did. And he continued to show his desire to not rely on true freshman unless he has no choice. Which is why he played Williams a lot early on. But this year he will have three highly rated true freshman in what is arguably his best HS recruiting class at LSU. IMO, 1 or 2 of those guys must be contributors. If not, it's hard to see any better results than last year...if at all

On top of that, those guys won’t be staying around if they aren’t playing.
I’ve never understood that with coaches. If these kids are good you are only going to have them 2 yrs, 3 max. So if you waste their freshman year not playing, you are only getting a year or so out of them
It was soooo maddening when we were losing 15 straight that Ward wasn’t playing .
At that point what difference didn’t it make,

Yeah, it really sucked when Ward, Reed, and Williams left early. Oh wait, that didn't happen... Too bad Chest got angry for redshirting at his own request and le... oh wait, that didn't happen either.

ETA: And btw, Ward played during the 15 game losing streak.

Slightly better record. They still don't have the talent to compete with the upper echelon teams, and probably never will under McMahon.

Yet we have 3 very good freshmen coming in who make up the 4th ranked class in the SEC.

So now recruiting rankings matter? You told us all last season they don’t.

Key is getting that out of conference record up. Then it helps absorb some losses in a conference that is much much stronger than 5-10 years ago top to bottom. If u can get double digit OOC wins and then win 10 conference games then u can at least be in line for NCAA tournament. Lose 5+ OOC and it’s hard to make it up in conference play
