For this being the worst LSU team ever as the rant likes to call it. They were a strike 3 pass ball and a catcher throwing error away from being 5-4 in SEC conference series with a 23-3 out of conference record. Instead of 3-6 playing for their lives Thursday-Saturday.

This team isn’t amazing and I think we are all spoiled with the type of season LSU had last year where they got close to record books for consecutive weeks of being #1, but this team isn’t the worst ever. Inexperience and growing pains and some really badly timed errors.

what game? Not UF for damn sure. That was a clear wild pitch that was played about as good as it could be for a 58 foot pitch.
Why didn’t you mention the multiple errors at SS or just last weekend the freaking misplayed outfield balls by Pearson? I know why.

He mentioned bad plays at the end of 2 games that would have us with a better outlook today. There are plenty of mistakes during the season. That is not his point.

Gotta love the hypotheticals. There are just as many "what ifs" that helped us win games. This season is comparable to the seasons that got Smoke and Mainieri fired. Not the worst season ever but it is easily one of the worst seasons in the past 40 years. Yes we are spoiled, its a terrible season for lsu. This kind of season happens more often at other schools. Should we lower our standards and expectations? Look at the fan attendance at bama. It was pathetic. They are okay with bad baseball. Not me.

Yes but as we discussed in another thread, good teams find a way to win. Also remember it ain’t over till it’s over. At the end of the day a win is a win. We need to take it one game at a time and give 110%.

The problem with this year’s team is every mistake we have made has come back to royally bite us on the arse. We haven’t caught a damn break, and a lot of that has been our own doing.

LSU really couldn't catch a break this season. It felt like all 50/50 plays went the other way

I believe he is mostly voicing his frustration with how close the season was despite some of the wailing and gnashing of teeth we have seen. This team was very close to being much better in the W-L column in conference play. THis does not look like the beginning of the end of LSU baseball as some have alluded. Add to that the SEC is much more competitive from top to bottom these days so even small misfires are more costly than in the past.

This is pure bullshite. For every "we shoulda coulda woulda won that game" there is and equally and opposite "we shoulda coulda woulda lost that game". Purple and gold bias only allows you to remember times we coulda won.

I remember narrowly beat ULL and Southeastern early this season. I remember we almost got swept by Miss State. Scored a run in the ninth to beat a bad auburn team 3-2. How about stealing two games from A&M. A team that is clearly better than us. Scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th to survive against northwestern. The what ifs go both ways folk. Stop lying to yourself. Bring on the downvotes!!

You can bet the Bamas, A&M's, Kentuckys, Georgias are buying players with NIL money big time.

The Tigers and Gators and others not so much.

Two things are true when you play close games. Your team is very close to being much better in the W-L column in conference play, Your team is also very close to being much worse in the W-L column in conference play. but you should also consider if a team is losing or winning close games at a higher rate.

Let's see how many games you lost or won by small margins. If you look at close games in conference play LSU lost more close games than they won by 2 to 1.

1 run W-2, L-4
2 run W-2, L-5
3 runs W-1, L2

So 2 runs or less, lost 9 and won 4, 3 runs or less lost 11 and won 5. If LSU just flips all the one-run games, they are now 12-15. If they flip 1 & 2 run games they 15-12.

Thanks for researching this. It has felt like we were just not a good close-game team

I kinda feel like when those games are heavily in favor of your opponents it highlights two things. One is that you are not doing some things well consistently and the other is that you are probably small improvements from being a very good team. If it were 2 to 1 in our favor I think that would indicate (usually) that everything is clicking for your team and you probably have a very very good team

While I agree with your premise, I can not recall a fairly routine 60 foot throw to end the game throw result in a two run error and a walk off win for LSU. Certainly not this year.

Yep. Both of our 2 run wins against A&M came with the help of 2 unearned runs. People can say this team is unlucky and all that BS all they want but that all balances out. They just don’t remember when we’ve had good luck and chalk it up to LSU just flat out beating the other team.

Experience and confidence - and of course talent - have a lot to do with winning close games.

The 2023 team was 9-4 in 1, 2, and 3 run SEC games.
