My daughter (no pics) is getting married at our East TX farm in November. She wants a tent with grass. What’s the best way to transform about an acre in our pasture to a nice thick stand of Bermuda in 6 months? Disc? Overseed? Nuke the Bahia, then seed? Any ideas? And watering will most likely be at the whims of mother nature unless I’m forced to do something crazy!

Wven if you get a thick stand, depending on where you are, good chance the bermuda will be dormant come Nov anyway. Could probably do an overseed of annual rye or PRG and have just as a nice of a lawn for the event.

what’s wrong with the Bahia? When mowed it makes the thickest lawn you’ll ever see. Nice and soft too

I would mow that acre every week or two til November. Then mow it the day before the tent is setup Bahia looks great mowed.

If don’t want Bahia then overseed with ryegrass. Should be good and green by November if you get rain

The best way to get it would be to nuke, disc, harrow, sod then fill the cracks with sand

That will be very expensive though, but you’d have the most beautiful acre of grass you’d want. You want to fertilize and spray for weeds.

All that said though, depending how far south you are, Bermuda would be dormant in 6 mths.

Well looks like the consensus is to baby the existing pasture. Thanks for the tips!

Agreed….he is going to spend 6 months and lots of $ for an event that will last an hour.

I’ll just say this. Seeding Bermuda is a 2-3 year process to get it nice enough to show off.

Year one will be half weeds, half grass.

In his case it would be since he said he doesn't have irrigation there. With irrigation, it can be awesome a few months after seeding, and really, really nice the next year.

This. Mow it consistently and level it with sand if you can. Spray for weeds if you want at the right time for the bahia to take over the dead spots.

Then lightly overseed with rye.

I will say that rye can produce grass stains more than a lot of grasses, but that seems like an accepted risk here.

emphasis on can be. Maybe if you have the attention to give to it. Almost certainly not an acre of it unless it were a full time job.

I mean, I water it, cut it often, spread pre-emergent this spring, sprayed for weeds once, and spread 33-0-0 once. Looks absolutely fantastic in just under a year. I have a 1.25 acre lot.

It’s definitely not a full-time job. But irrigation is the key (and hot weather) which the OP doesn’t have.

My lawn is in here. This was a month ago. The lawn looked really nice already after a few months though.

Beautiful. I seriously would look to level out big dips in areas that will get foot traffic. Don’t want grandma to sprain an ankle.
