This is the assassins creed setting that people have demanded incessantly for a decade plus and Ubisoft DEIs it up resulting in at least half the market in the west and probably 90% of the market in the east ignoring it. This is pure comedy.

Ubisoft's "Japanese Historical Expert" they used for this gane is Sachi Schmidt-Hori. She's a gender studies "expert" and wrote books on pre-17th Century man-boy romantic relationships in Japanese culture.

In their mind, the history of western civ has left out anything and everything having to do with minorities so this is just correcting that.
There were TONS of black samurai back then, as well as black European kinds and queens, etc but whitey has written them out of history books.

It wouldn't surprise me if Japan bans this game from even being released in that country. Won't matter either way as no one in Japan will be buying it.
I'll play it if it ever hits Game Pass. That's a huge change for me as I have purchased a physical copy of every mainline Assassin's Creed game.
The only black "samurai" in history wasn't a samurai at all and never fought in a battle. LINK
Regardless, playing as a black assassin in Japan makes no sense. He can't blend in. It doesn't fit Assassin's Creed.

It’s sort of an insane character choice.
1. He doesn’t blend in, even in a assissin’s hood the guy was probably a head taller and if anyone saw skin tone it would stand out
2. he was the vassal of a major lord. The only black guy was pretty well known. how can he also be an assassin?
