This video single handedly caused Duolingo's stock to tank.

This is only going to get better, and those already using it are saying its amazing. There are apps that were doing similar stuff, but none that I know of worked quite this well as people are saying

Eventually everyone will just be walking with earpieces in and you'll be able to hear what anyone else says in your own language

Impressive, but I wonder how well it can do with obscure languages and dialects.

I have found Google Translate to be quite effective for years. Is this really that much better?

But nothing will ever replace true face-to-face fluency.

Eventually? shite, son. How do you think the UN works? Them little shits have ear pieces in with real time translations into their own language.

Agreed.

Yes, this overcomes the language barrier, which can be very useful for travelers who are in a jam and need a tool like this.

But it does jack shite for the "respect barrier." One of the greatest benefits of learning another culture's language is the respect and cultural access that comes with it.

Or you could look at it this way: two American guys have lunch at a French restaurant. The first guy has taken the time and effort to learn French. He greets the waiter and orders in French.

The other guys pulls out his phone and has it translate his English into French.

Which guy do you think is going to have a better experience?

That is one specific example you're using. But I've found that these translation apps work well to help connect with locals (when you're a tourist) at levels that before would have been impossible.

For example, my wife and I visited Japan and Korea last summer. Whether it was in a cab, at an izakaya, etc... we used google translate to connect with locals by asking questions and getting to know them in ways that without the app, we just wouldn't have been able to. We had so much fun communicating back and forth in our native languages, a lot of laughs, and even got us preferred treatment, especially in the izakayas.

It's always a good rule of thumb to learn some of the local language as a form of respect, as you pointed out. But in addition to that, these apps can help you connect with locals at a deeper level, in my experience.

Give it enough training data and it will have no problem.

Except the part where you will never know if the translations you are receiving or what is being sent out is accurate. Same can be said of using a human translator. Its a risk, unless you are fluent in the languages being used

I can’t figure out how to find this. It just keeps translating what I say to text.

And with folks with speech impediments and with folks who don’t know what they’re talking about….
