Deciding between either Riptide Terrova or Xi5. Both seem to have the same features, but there's about a $500 difference. I have a Lowrance so the Motor Guide's capability with it is nice, but not a deal maker if the MK is that much better. Thoughts on the two?

Riptide Terrova

I have the 80# for 5 years now. Love it. No issues to date and use it 2-3x a month on average. Added the foot pedal which I mostly use for fresh water trips, stick with the remote when chasing trout.

Tomato Potato.

They are both great. The only people that take time to post on the internet are ones with problems, so it is always a small sample size.

If you have Lowrance then going MG makes sense. Good Luck!

I have had 2 Xi3's. First one was a POS. The one I have now has the anchor mode which is nice. I have had this one for 2 years with no issues.

I've had a Terrova for 4 years and I'm still satisfied as the first day I tried it.

My only complaint with my motoguide is the remote, the motor has been flawless. But where the lanyard attaches is a real weak point. Minn kota has the better remote.

Minn Kota fan here, not that they aren’t pretty close now, but remember the days that MG had those steel shafts that I would bend, fishing in the jungle. Went to MK and got rid of the headaches and not going back. Composite shafts were a huge leap forward in fishing…

I’ve had my minn kota for about 7.5 years. I’ve put that thing through hell and it’s still running strong. Came into the dock a little hot one day to get out of the spillway current and slammed it against a piling and broke the blade, but just changed it out and was good to go. Other than that, which was 100% my fault, I’ve never had an issue with it. The slim electric pedal on mine is my favorite part about it because my boat doesn’t have a recessed foot pedal box in the front deck for a cable driven pedal.

I went Minn Kota for an 80lb. I didn’t need any linking capability. I think you might be able to do NMEA link between the two. I don’t think there is any huge difference between the two.

Love my Terrova (80#). As said above, the Spotlock is a game changer. I haven’t been in my anchor locker since I got mine. Just made the switch to lithium a couple of months ago, looking forward to punishing some snapper and mangroves if the winds will ever relent.

Gonna go with the Terrova. Looked into the lowrance/MG linking and doesn’t seem worth it. Thanks for the feedback!

Terrova appears to be wildly popular. Buddy who works on them recommended it over the Ulterra, citing the deployment system on that one being less than reliable.

Have a new Terrova myself, and so far very impressed. Have been a MK fan for 30 years, quality never seemed problematic and had good experience with warranty matters on a MK batt charger one time I needed it.

I've had both and both were good TMs. I currently have an 80# Ultrex and love it. I too have Lowrance units.

Minn Kota Service Dept is 2nd to none.

Reminds me that I was working to replace the clip on a cheap assed Minn Kota Edge. I needed to hammer out the pin holding the clip. I took the motor off and just had the bracket and swing arms to deal with. In a moment of inattention the swing arms closed and cut the pad off of my left ring finger. Now here I am almost eight weeks later with a large scab and patches of regrowing skin on my finger. I tossed the bracket and the motor into the lake. I didn't want to see the part of the bracket with my finger meat on it.

Not sure how much you fish in grass, but I've had both and the MK performs much better in grass.

i've had both. Either is good but the motorguide is better at holding anchor mode or spot lock. the xi5 i have now is 8 years old and has never had a problem other than i had to replace the remote ($100) this year as the circuit board was corroded. My boat stays on lift in salt water and remote stays with it. I wouldn't be afraid to purchase either if you have a favorite brand. i was told Minn Kota customer service is better and parts availibility but i haven't had to use that on motorguide yet

I really like the terrova. More power than I ever had on a troll motor. I do use footpedal for fresh and the wireless remote for salt. Also linked to humminbird units and talon. Can run a contour line on a map and can deploy talon when you get to a way point.
