It kinda goes in waves but every now and again, I’ll find myself in situations where I can’t stop thinking about work. Almost to an obsession. Usually it’s coupled with insomnia and stress, in particular about something I may have missed or forgotten to do. 99.9% it has little to no outcome on how a project will turn out, but any mistakes and I just wear the shite until it grates on me. I know it’s unhealthy and damaging. How do I keep from “bringing work home” short of a career change? It really sucks sometimes and I get these morose vibes that it’s taking years off my life.

It doesn’t affect my ability to fall asleep but it is almost always the reason I wake up at 3:15am, coupled with tossing and turning until the alarm goes off at 5:30. Overall the company is very successful and I’m a key factor in that. But I’m always one to just laser in on the cons rather than the pros.

Anybody else ever felt like that, who may have some pointers on how to manage it?

I was the same way. A weighted blanked helped me sleep better but it wasn’t a complete fix.

Fortunately I was promoted into a different job that was a lot less stressful and that solved a lot of my issues.

Seems like your body trying to tell you that you are unhappy and maybe should try to make a career change. Doesn't have to be anything immediately but if this goes on for years it will knock years off your life.

Nobody said pimpin was easy.

If your pimp hand is skrong, the night hours should go easier.

Work is only important at work. Meditation, therapy, last resort medication. It takes practice but try and learn to live in the moment. No phone or tv at night. I usually aside from last night put phone down several hours before bedtime.

I agree, he likely needs a career change. But he doesn’t sound open to that. I’ll suggest instead that OP tells his manager about his deep stress issues, discusses his key role in the performance of the company, and tries to resolve some of the stress by getting additional help with his duties or offloading some entirely

Yes, I dealt with chronic stress in my previous career in construction. Looking back I think it had a lot to do with never really being able to disconnect. If I wasn’t at work on a weekend I was getting calls all weekend. If I was on vacation I got calls every day. People always wanted updates, wanted answers. It got to the point where I would lay in bed and run all the things I hadn’t done thru my head, or if I had a shitty phone call, etc.

I like the weighted blanket idea. Some nights I’d get my sleeping bag and go lay on the couch, so I guess that’s a similar solution. Don’t take melatonin because you’ll get anxiety about that working. I did it one time and ended up not sleeping at all that night.

Ultimately I decided to switch industries. I miss it all the time but I have a lot more control over the phone calls in all hours of the day. Age has helped too.

I struggle with the same thing. I notice it gets bad from November to February when it gets dark early. In the Spring , Summer and early fall I can get outside
After work and do something. Exercise , something with the kids , work in the yard. Things that are active and get my mind off it. But unfortunately it’s dark and usually cold when I get home for about 4 months out of the year. I used to hunt a lot during the winter but with kids and work and living an hour and a half away I just can’t do that except for the weekends. I’m trying to read more but it hasn’t helped much. Hope you get it figured out.

This is also a sign that you're motivated and give a damn about your production. Try to find that balance, easier said than done.

Intrusive thoughts are a feature of OCD. See a psychiatrist.

It might help you to realize that- unless you own ur own business- most companies dont give a damn about you and would cut or shed you without a second thought if it meant saving one dollar on the bottom line.. To most companies, you are just a number , and loyalty from most companies to most employees is a figment of ur imagination.. So just do your best and leave it at that .

I do at certain times of the year. I still wake up at least once nightly to check the time on my phone. One of my biggest anxieties going on a couple decades now is oversleeping and being late for work.

A good evening working out helps. Like, the kind of work out (lifting, bjj) that causes you to instantly fall asleep once you put your head on the pillow and promotes deep sleep throughout the night.

Perfect is the enemy of good. Most of the time good is acceptable and the extra time chasing perfect is wasted time to be more productive. It is a challenge to accept this mindset. At least in my field, I can offer more productivity at being good on more projects versus perfect on fewer.

It will start making you physically ill and then you’ll learn it isn’t worth it. You can get past it without any changes to your career but it isn’t easy. Try some magnesium glycinate before bed.

Maybe instead of a career change you could find a job change? I had a work issue several years ago. I was completely stressed all the time and finally had to get the frick out of there. I was able to get a different job in another office (same overall Office though), and now I make 45% more money with maybe 5% of the responsibility…I was the manager in my old position and at a lower level in this new one despite the additional money. It’s great.

It’s one of the best decisions I ever made work-wise, and I should’ve done it years before I did it. But immediately all the work related stress in my life vanished and I was able to enjoy things again.

I knew it was a problem when it started affecting my home life. My wife would always ask me if I was okay and I’d be like “Nope, not at all.”

The only times I can remember this happening to me is when work sucked.

If you think the suck is temporary then try something like guided meditation before you go to sleep. That worked pretty well with me. If this is just how work is for you, I know you don’t want to change course but I’d strongly consider that.

Life’s to short to be working in your sleep and not getting paid for it.
