Seger or Springsteen

I personally prefer Bob Seger. His sound is more rock and roll and he’s such a good songwriter. You can relate to Night Moves, Old Time Rock and Roll and Turn the Page.
While the Boss has earned much street cred with Born in the USA, most of his songs seem to relate to growing up in New England and steel mills, etc. I can’t visualize his songs ( and barely understand them). I don’t hate Bruce and don’t necessarily dislike his music. However only given a choice between the two, I’d rather listen to Seger over Springsteen.
Just wondering if other folks felt the same way or disagree? There are no right or wrong Answers.

Seger for me, and it’s not particularly close. Born after both were in their heyday, so I only am basing this off of whose music sounds better. Still the Same is one of my favorite songs of all time.
I also can’t stand Bruce Springsteen. Politics aside, Seger has a much much better body of work than Springsteen ever had.

I don't know, you made a pretty compelling case for a wrong answer

Seger all day every day

I prefer the '60s Seger to his later work. Not only the hit "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" but also more obscure songs like "East Side Story"
Like a lot of people in the '70s, he became much more pompously bombastic, which made him very AOR- friendly.
I think of Seger as a Springsteen imitator in the manner of John Cougar, which is of course ironic since Seger was around for years before Springsteen

Bob Seger, it's not even close for me. Amazing lyricist, singer, performer.

This is exactly correct. Many on here seemed to form their opinion of Bruce based solely on overplaying of Born in the USA and more recent political outspokenness. But nothing Seger has ever done compares to Bruce’s stretch from the Wild Innocent and E Street Shuffle through Born in USA. Kafka is correct that early Seger was very different (and better) than his later, more popular work. Seger’s later work changed and directly mimicked Springsteen. Of course you could argue that Springsteen mimicked Dylan which is probably true lyrically but musically there was a big difference especially with Clarence’s sax

I think Springsteen gets a little too much hate. He’s not the greatest thing ever but he has put out some amazing music. Nebraska is an outstanding album as is Darkness of on the Edge Town. Also a great live performer. Go watch or listen to one of his live shows from the 78 or 80-81 tour.

I agree... I actually don't really care for the stuff he's more known for.. and down right loathe some of it..
This is an easy answer for me and not really a debate at all... Springsteen is head and shoulders above... and while his recordings have tailed off, his live shows are still amazing!

I think you can see some of that in his very early work, when he left behind the heavy blues rock of Steel Mill (who needed more of that?) and struck out solo.. He was still trying to find his own niche and I'm sure the John Hammond/Columbia connection helped to fuel that... But when he finally hit his stride with the E Street Band in the mid-70s, any similarities were gone..

I'm a huge fan of both, but I know this board, in general, are Boss haters. . Both have those raspy, street voices and use them well. Both are great songwriters with prolific careers. But given the choice, I take the Boss.
Springsteen, very simply, puts on one of the best and longest shows in the business (at least when he was younger). I liked him as a teen but became a huge fan after I first saw him live. Seem him 6 times since.
The first time I listened to the Born to Run album in my parents' hous my mother (a musician) said "Whoever told that guy he could sing?" She said the same about Bono. Well, neither are what you'd call a classic singer, but many pop/rock stars aren't. But they do what they do and they do it well.

Agree with this. This board is really negative on Springsteen and I don't know why.
I wouldn't have him as my GOAT, but he's been a fantastic live performer for 50 years, has great lyrical ability and adjusted his sound successfully several times. His core sound isn't necessarily my favorite (which is why I don't put him at my top) but he's a legend for a reason.

Springsteen. Seger never had a great album. Bruce had several (Born to Run, Darkness...,The River, Nebraska, Born in the USA). He is a loud mouth tool currently that is tarnishing his legacy with crap new albums but he had a great run. Funny how Rolling Stone keeps propping up Springsteen and U2 because of their politics; their current stuff sucks.

Seger or Springsteen
Seger's sense of melody is radically superior to Springsteen's.
And his voice is way better too.
So, to summarize - Springsteen sucks.

I’ve felt for a while that he has gotten more political for just this reason…to stay relevant and in favor with the music press.
