So he developed an unhittable pitch in like 7 innings. Yeah he’s not a real person

Does it also have arm side run like a change up? I could only watch on gamecast so I couldn’t actually see the pitches, but it seemed like every time he missed with it it was arm side.

He was at 100 pitches through 6. No reason to potentially wind up with 140 pitches trying to get a no-no.

And an 8 run lead

Yes. It’s 96mph and professionals looked like idiots swinging at it today.

If you throw fastballs, you can probably get by. It’s when you throw balls with movement that mess your arm up. Nolan Ryan threw with power and that’s why he was as durable as he was.

He could throw a curve. He just learned to throw curves after his arm more fully developed after high school. That's one reason he lasted so long. He took care of his arm and worked it out with bands a lot as he got older. A lot of the pitchers back in the day took the same approach which was why they could pitch so long (steroids for some aside).

That's what I was saying earlier in the thread. Coaches these days teach young pitchers curves etc too early and it can screw up their arms in the long term.

Nolan Ryan threw a lot of curve balls, a very good one actually

Risk verses reward…. Risk him tearing or blowing out his shoulder in game 2 of a long career? No as much as I wanted him to keep pitching,

I highly doubt Pittsburgh lets his pitch count get above 100 very often this year in general. The Pirates aren’t contending, why blow out his or Jared Jones arm this year?

The movement on that sinker was crazy and then when you see that it was coming in at 96 made it even crazier.

I know it’s early but that was Mo Rivera level nastiness where he basically could tell everyone it was coming and there wouldn’t be much you can do about it.

Also my non scientific opinion is that Skenes is just built right to throw 100mph. He basically is built like an NFL tightend. 6’6” 250 with thick legs.

That's normal and healthy, and it's old school for pitchers to rely on heaters until they develop more before learning new pitches. It protects their arm more in the long term. Too many coaches abuse young pitchers these days like a rented mule to win games (teaching them these pitches too early), killing their long-term careers.

Stop living in the 90s, off speed puts less stress on the elbow valgus than fastballs do

Before spouting off how about researching things from this century

I wonder if Paul knows where it is going. Some had serious arm side run and others just dove straight down at the plate.

Considering he threw it about 40 times and only walked one guy, I suppose he has an idea.

I understand the desire to let him see it through and get a no hitter.

But it was a smart play by the Pirates. If you don’t understand why, I don’t think any one here can help you.
