Well that's an understatement.
The track was green for only 23 minutes. Pretty crappy start to the week. These guys must have been really anxious to get some good laps in today. Dixon and Sato at the top of the timesheets early in the week fits the pattern of recent years. Otherwise, can't really read much into it when they were only able to complete a few laps on the day.
I guess there are going to be a lot of eyes on Larson. I have no Idea if he's universally loved in NASCAR or there are a lot of fans who don't want to see him succeed.
No one is talking about him, but Sato has won 2 of the last 7 Indy 500s, and last year held his own on a really strong Ganassi team, finishing P7. All four Ganassi drivers finished in the top 7. The last few years he has gotten up to speed very quickly in the first week of practice. I think he's going to be a real asset to RLL. Sato, Lundgaard and Graham should make a strong team. Of course last year RLL was absolutely horrible, so I guess that's a bold prediction.

Man it takes forever to scrub that speed off at those speeds after a wreck. He was seen and released so all is good except the car.

Chevy with some jaw-dropping speeds on Fast Friday.
I'm hoping Honda is just sandbagging on a setting today, so the first 3-4 rows of the grid isn't all Chevys.

A lot of incidents for how little track time. So far it’s a bit tricky getting around. Looks to be an interesting 500 so far.

Did they do something different to the curb (kerb) at the apex? I don’t recall them having that much trouble before.

Here's the results of the qualifying order draw. Gee, how "lucky" that all three of the track and series owner's cars are in the top 10 of the order? The guys at the top of the list should have an advantage as the cool morning air should produce a bit more horsepower and more downforce than the warmer afternoon air.

FYI, in case there are any new fans who plan to watch qualifying this weekend:
Saturday and Sunday Indy 500 qualifying format
Saturday's qualifying session will see 18 drivers locked onto the starting grid, with the 13th through 30th place drivers (Rows 5 to 10) securing their grid positions.
The top 12 drivers on Saturday advance to Sunday to set Rows 1 to 4. On Sunday's first round of pole qualifying, the slower six drivers will set Rows 3 and 4, and the top six will go to the Firestone Fast Six to battle for pole position and set Rows 1 and 2. I think they introduced the two-round Sunday pole qualifying last year? Before that, it was the top nine drivers advancing to Sunday and they each got just one run for pole. I like the older version better.
The slowest drivers who fail to lock into the top 30 on Saturday must go to Sunday's bump qualifying session to determine which three drivers qualify on the last row, Row 11. As there are 34 total entrants this year, four drivers will do bump qualifying for three spots, so one lonely driver will be left out.
You might remember last year when there were also 34 entrants, and three out of the four cars that had to do bump qualifying were the RLL cars of Graham Rahal, Christian Lundgaard, and Jack Harvey. The fourth car was Sting Ray Robb. Ultimately it was Graham Rahal that was bumped from the race by his teammate Harvey. Graham's tears were in full view and made for great television. But the drama continued on Monday, when during a practice session Stefan Wilson crashed and fractured his back. On Tuesday morning Graham Rahal was announced as Wilson's replacement for the Indy 500. But what was really crazy about that is that Wilson was driving a Chevy-powered car, and Graham was a long-time Honda driver. Both Chevy and Honda had to sign off on this, and there are numerous contractual, marketing, and competitive reasons why they would both object to this arrangement. But I think the (cough Bobby cough) Rahal name was big enough that neither side wanted to be the one to deny Graham the opportunity to race, so the deal was done.
