I'm in need of a club to fill the gap between my Driver and 5 iron. I just started playing again about a year ago. Bought a Driver from a buddy that has a stiff shaft. I know for sure the stiff shaft is killing my distance off the tee. A good drive with decent roll is about 250-270 for me total. I've slowed my swing down on drives to maintain straighter more playable shots but lost distance and I'm ok with that. Saturday I played Percy Quin from the white tees and every par 5 and long par 4s I was still so far out that even my best 5 iron which is generally about 185yds on average wasn't enough to get me close. I'm looking for recommendations on a fairway wood or hybrid that's forgiving but will help me fill that gap also. I've tried the driver off the deck for my second shot route and that just doesn't work for me. My 5 Iron is a Callaway Mavrik with 21* of loft if that makes any difference for recommendation sake. I plan on going to Dick's or Edwin Watts and hitting a few on the simulator to get some performance data before I just buy but i didnt know if there was anything I should try first.

I carry a Taylormade Qi10 5wood and Stealth 2 7wood..

I've tried to go another direction on fairway woods but always come back to Taylormade for some reason.. to me the turf interaction and sound are what i really enjoy.. Even though I'd consider myself more a Ping person since I have Irons, Driver and the Icrossover and a putter than i put in a play every once in a while.. I've just not like Ping fairway woods..

And to answer your question for find a 5 wood you feel confident with.. a 3wood I find is just way more difficult to strike consistently and you probably won't see a massive yardage gap going with 5w as opposed to a 3w overall..

I would honestly recommend at least two clubs in between those clubs.

I'd add a 3 or 4 wood and a 3 or 4 hybrid.

If I could only pick one, i'd go 3 hybrid because that would be the most middle ground as far as yardages go.

I have driver, 3W, 3H, 4i, 5i, etc. I really want to add a 4 hybrid but that would put 15 clubs in my bag.

My Callaway Epic hybrid is the best hybrid I've ever hit and probably my most reliable club. But there are so many good options out there right now, the most important thing, even more so than who makes the club, is having the right shaft. Getting fitted for the right shaft will be your best bet. I'd trust the guys at Edwin Watts a little more than I would the guys at Dicks to get you fitted right.

5 wood would probably be best. If you can test clubs I would do that. If not Ping is probably the best bet, super forgiving and easy to hit off the deck. New old stock Ping G425 for $249 is a good value. Cobra Aerojet/LTDx for $199/159 is a good option for even cheaper. You’ve got some speed so shafts in the 70 gram range would be typical, stiff flex or maybe even x stiff if your tempo is quick.

Seeing so much hype about people putting 7woods in their bags. Interesting.

Like others have said, you probably would be good with a 5 wood. I'm older and a short hitter so I carry a 3 wood and 3 Hybrid both Pings. Love my G430 3 W, very easy to hit.

I've carried a 7w for 3 years now and absolutely love it .. before I carried a 3 hybrid and never really hit it well.. 7w is easy to hit from a tee, fairway, rough.. hell I even chip with it if it's on the fringe and it's a long distance to the pin.. I use it a lot..

Funny, I was typing mine up about the U505 and saw this.

Go hit a U505. 2 or 3 iron I think will get you the distance you’re looking for.

The ones I bought have taken my 5w out of the bag.

Hard to beat the Stealth 2 fairway woods especially since they are marked down as well.

Sim 2 max 3 wood is a rocket launcher. So is the 3 hybrid.

I hit the U505 the other day...20 degree 3I. Man, what a little rocket launcher. I hit it extremely well. We are going to Bandon this fall and I'm going to put one of these in the bag to replace my 7W. Too worried about the wind and having that 7W balloon into orbit. I might actually get the 2I and 3I but I really like that club.

To the OP...I carry a TSR2 4W (16.5 degree). For whatever reason, it's so much more confidence inspiring off the deck vs a 3W. No idea why but that or a 5W would probably do well for you. Callaway makes a hybrid/wood called the Apex Utility Wood. That might work or be worth giving a shot. If you don't get along with fairway woods, then driving irons might be worth it. I think Pings are super easy to hit as well. The G430 line is very nice and easy to hit.

You should look into the Callaway Paradym Super Hybrid. Super easy to hit and distance-wise, is roughly between a wood and regular hybrid. I can’t hit a 3-wood for shite, so that club helped with the distance and ease of use I was missing between my driver and 4-iron

Find a good used TaylorMade titanium sim or sim2 18* they are rocket launchers. Easy to hit off of the tee and deck.

Taylor made QI10 HL 16.5

It’s crazy easy to hit with the extra 1.5* loft but still goes!!!! I can’t over sell this club. I have the 15* and love mine

That’s what my U505 kicked out of the bag.

Try it, pretty sure you won’t regret it. Other than I cost you $ for having to buy one.

So I ended up at Edwin Watts on the way home yesterday. I swung every brand 3 and 5 w they had stiff and regular shaft. I ended up going home with a new Callaway Paradym AI Smoke with a Tensei R flex shaft. The Ping G430 and Srixon MK II were a close second and third. The paradym was straighter for me, better carry and overall distance. My next step is an R flex driver shaft and getting a fitting done and all my clubs cut down, loft/lie adjusted as needed and unlock the full potential of my bag. So whose the best around BR or surrounding areas for those services and about how much can I expect that to run me? Thanks for all the input fellas I appreciate it.

Tiger still carries the TaylorMade M3 5 wood that came out in 2018.
There may be something sitting in that pre-owned bin that strikes just as well as the new, latest and greatest woods.

I definitely looked through the pre owned and gave them all a second look. Nothing worked for me performance wise. all the shafts were stiff/XS and i couldn't get the distance with them. I have slowed my driver swing and now 5w swing down to help maintain control. I'm sure a lesson or 2 could tell me what I'm doing wrong and get my swing speed back up but I need to get my whole bag fit first. I know my irons are long and killing my distance just from the way I have to choke down on them to address the ball properly. I grew up playing hand me downs and now I have a whole bag of new clubs for the first time in my life so the learning curve/adjustment is real.
