Look at the eyes. Thats the easiest way to tell if you’re not sure whether it deserves to be left alone or needs to meet the business end of a shovel

Pit vipers (cottonmouths, copperheads and rattlesnakes) all have those cat-like elipitical shaped pupils. Water snakes and most other harmless snakes have round pupils

Not 100% accurate. Their pupils can be round under certain light conditions.
