Same, I joined in 2011 and not being able to look back at previous investments and transactions will suck. I guess I’ll check out Credit Karma.

I'm giving Monarch a try. I'm trying to get my Mint data loaded...so far, no dice.

Ya, I did a little of that today. The hard part is if you have old cancelled credit cards in the csv transactions, Monarch is going to ask you to either "Ignore" it or map it to an account you have already linked.

So far I've chosen to ignore importing those transactions. I thought about mapping them to an account I did have, because ultimately, does it matter that I spent $400 on a canceled Citi Premier card 7 years ago but I map it to an active Chase Freedom? Perhaps that's a strategy to get those super old transactions into Monarch, but I probably care more about old net worth history if I can get it than old credit transactions.

ETA: This is my first experience with "zero budgeting" and I fricking hate it Especially on the software side of this app. In Mint, I got to the point where I had simplified my budget where a few line items had a budget, and then I made a budget called "Everything Else" and no matter if it was shopping, or vacation, or whatever, Mint threw it in that budget line. I don't care about spending $47 in Medical and $67 in Public Transport specifically, or whatever Monarch has assigned as the value of what I spend money on regularly and I need to figure out how to get Monarch to not do that or we are going to have a short relationship on the budget side of things. That's overly complicated and I'm not 12 years old and don't need my hand held.

I had all the accounts linked to the CSV upload and then got “an unexpected error occurred”…called it quits and will try again another day.

I’m approaching the old account problem the same as you.

See my ETA above on budgeting.

How's that going for you? I may just need to fiddle with it more.

Ok I figured it out. Setting -> Categories and you can then move things around and also budget by the Group and not every single category.

I may give Quicken Premier a try as well.

I’m low key panicking right now. I had no idea but I’ve had it since 2011. This service has been a huge asset for me to aggregate all my accounts in one place so I don’t have to run down everything. I was subscribed to the premium but I would’ve paid a lot more for the service.

I haven’t set budgets yet…will try that later this week.

I’ve got three tickets in with the help and support team. They like to talk about “real humans” helping so interested in response times on these issues. I have one account syncing issue that is a deal breaker.

I’ve used personal capital for the last several years, and used Mint before that. I’ve had minimal contact with Personal Capital’s reps. I find their interface very nice and intuitive, although it does suffer from some of the same account log out issues that Mint did.

It also does a bit more advice on investments and less on budget analysis. I would say for this stage in my life investments matter more than making sure I keep my entertainment budget at $500 for the month or whatever.

Anybody try Quicken Simplifi? I signed up for it and can't get any of my investment accounts to sync. Definitely not impressed with the product so far.

There seemed to be some unwritten rule that you can't have both.

I'm not pinching pennies, and perhaps "budgeting" software is aimed at people who don't have a lot of investments so they don't need that portion, but I like having both. If anything it helps me spot a transaction that looks off/fraudulent.

I’ve had Quicken since 2017 and love it. I have Quicken Deluxe and use the program solely to track spending and account balances. I don’t budget or track investments with it.

I have Mint solely to track networth so I guess I’ll need to figure something else out for that.

ETA: no experience with Simplifi..

ive used pretty much every app listed here plus several others (Mint, Moneydance, Banktivity, Everydollar, etc) but am currently using Quicken for Mac.

Quicken for Windows
Pros - the most robust personal finance app and its not even close. can even track a very small business and rental properties
Cons - can be slow and clunky and could use a rebuild. some modules haven't been redone in like 10-15 years. i don't like the budget but better than the Mac version

Quicken for Mac
Pros - fast, more modern version of Quicken. good investment tools and reports. 2nd most robust app on my list
Cons - missing some features of the Windows version like Debt Reduction Planner, Savings Goals, Lifetime Planner, and a few reports, though I think there are plans to add them in the future. I don't like the budget - No "Everything Else" for things you didn't budget for. budgeting for anything with transfers sucks

Simplifi
Pros - I really liked their Spending Plan. so far it's my favorite way to budget without doing a detailed budget like in Mint, Quicken, YNAB, etc. Also liked their Watch List where you can set a goal and track just a couple of categories like restaurants or groceries on your dashboard
Cons - the investment tools aren't good. pretty much just tracks balances. entering split transactions was too clunky. seemed like I had to reconnect accounts too often. reports not as good as Quicken

Personal Capital (Empower)
Pros - probably the best investment tools.
Cons - they didn't have split transactions but maybe that has changed. overall the spending reports and tools weren't as good as those listed above

YNAB
Pros - best budgeting tools. if you're pinching pennies to pay off debt or grow savings this is probably the best
Cons - too geared towards budgeting for my tastes. worst app for investments. reports not as good as those listed above

My CSV file upload to Monarch failed again. I'm losing faith in this solution.

Interface isn't as good as Mint but it's acceptable.

Wonder what the deal is. I had no issues at all with that part of things.

Interface is a little more convoluted but so far I'd say it works better from a bug/performance perspective. I had this thing with Mint for the past year or so when they updated their interface, those little widget boxes on their website version would never load on first landing and I'd need to refresh them. Every single time or nothing else would work. After refresh, it would almost always work. So this is a nice change.

Does Quicken have the ability to import old balance or transaction data? It seems none of the apps have this … the balance they show starts on the day you link the account.

id say quicken probably has the best chance of importing old data of all the apps. the initial download from your institution will only be maybe 3 months, some more. it will automatically create an opening balance based on your current balance and all your transactions. most sites will allow you to view up to a year's worth of transactions, though, and many have the option to download those transactions to a quicken import file. you'd still have to go and categorize everything which could be time consuming and you probably don't know what you bought at Walmart a year ago.

if you're moving from mint or another app, you should be able to download a CSV of all your transactions. if you google "quicken import mint" I believe there's a utility or website that will convert the CSV into a quicken import file. ive never done it so I don't know how well it works

it sucks to start over but if you have to, id say pick the same starting date for all your accounts, preferably the beginning of the month, and go from there

Let me note that Mint will only download 10,000 transactions at a time, so what you need to do if you've been using it for years is filter the transaction page by date.

Do something like January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2016 and break it down into chunks.

My checking account has the ability to download a QFX (Quicken) file type that I can drag directly into the program to populate old transaction data for as far back as my bank will allow me to download data. After the initial manual download, you can then choose to have auto downloads moving forward.

I also just checked and Chase Credit cards have the ability to download to QFX format. Just check your accounts to see if they have that ability.

I've requested all of my data from Mint/Intuit and will delete the account once received. It indicated it could take up to 15 days...

Moving over to Quicken deluxe (rather back to Quicken after a long break).

What is this “request all data” versus just downloading CSVs?
